Published: Friday 3rd Apr 2020 by Rashad

The music realm continues to reel at news of R&B/Soul icon Bill Withers‘ passing.

As his songs ‘Lean On Me,’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ ‘Lovely Day,’ and more are listed on the soundtrack to many lives, it’s only fitting and expected to see a bevy of tributes lifted in his honor.

Beyond the many turning to his music for consolation (as evidenced by his greatest hits dominating streaming and digital download platforms), admirers – including some of the biggest names in Pop and R&B – are taking to social media to bid farewell.

John Legend, Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan, Justin Timberlake, and Chance the Rapper are just a few of them.  See more inside:

Through my process of learning music, digging for brakes and studying songs, One of the names seen more than others was Bill Withers,I use to sit in a living room on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn with @chadelliottceo looking for breaks all day and one of our favorites, was the break in “Ain’t No Sunshine” I remember thinking, I wonder what made him do this, cause the song didn’t call for that but the soul did and from there I noticed that element in everyone of his songs ? ❤️ ??

You will always be one of my biggest idols. You taught me so much about how to keep it simple and real. I felt such a kinship with you even before we met. Your words and melodies… the chords that accompanied them… they reached into my soul and spoke to me so deeply. That’s what your music did. It brought so many of us closer to you and to each other. And, to actually know you was truly something special. You shined a light that was so unique and warm. I looked up to you the same way I looked up to my Poppa… and he was my favorite human in the world. You have always been one of the greatest and will forever be. I will miss your jokes and I will never forget your advice to me about music… “How does it make you FEEL? That’s the only question you have to answer.”⠀ ⠀ Rip Mr. Withers. One of a kind.⠀ ⠀ Ps. Swipe over to get a glimpse of the jokester he was. A little backstory: he led a songwriters discussion with Max, Shellback and myself and took the time out to put together a story and made us all think it was from a real bio. Who does that?? Only Mr. Bill.

I don’t even know how to process this one. He was my first song writing hero. And the BLUE PRINT for so many of us. I met him once, he came to see me play at the House of Blues in 2001 (i begged his manager Ron Weiss) and HE BLEW OUR MINDS! When he came back stage ?~ at first I didnt know who he was, becsue he was tall and fine (which took me aback a little LOL) and he was low key and cool. He stayed for the show and came back to say good bye. He invited me over for dinner too, but i was so busy ~ I kept saying next time i’m in L.A. // ~it was MORE than talent, he SPOKE TO US. My family sang his song at my Grand mothers funeral. He told OUR stories like no one else. He was THE model for what GOOD PEN GAME IS. How to sing the SIMPEL TRUTH. RIP to a TRUE raconteur, griot, and author of some of the MOST important pages of the american song book. #ripbillwithers #rip #billwithers

It was 2011 and @courtneybvance took me to one of the best concerts in my life: @sade & #billwithers. I can still hear him singing his heart out on stage. Now he’ll sing in our hearts forever. God bless you & keep you. Your anthems will be sung loud and strong today and always. xoAng

Your music was/is/always will be medicinal. Your sound intersected so many styles and influences, the best ingredients to get through rough times and make good times greater. Led by a voice that was as unique as your pen and chord choices. Your advice to so many of us, who were blessed to meet/know you, was sound. You will be missed big brother. Rest with the master now. Continued blessings and favor to your family, love ones and admirers. ??✨

He said in the song; “When I get to Heaven I’ll look for Grandma’s Hands!”
Bill Withers is now holding his Grandma’s Hands. That has brought me Joy between the tears.

+’Justments I had on vinyl, 8-track for my first car, cassette for my next couple of cars and CD for all subsequent cars. Saw him in concert a couple of times. Righteous. Plus, he married Denise Nicholas. He felt like family. Blessings to those in his inner circle. RIH
