New Song: Brandy – ‘Baby Mama’ (featuring Chance the Rapper)

Published: Thursday 30th Apr 2020 by Rashad

She’s back!

It’s been over 7 years since Brandy dropped her last album, the critically-acclaimed ‘Two Eleven.’  Despite a few false starts and ample teasing in the time since, the wait for her faithful fans – affectionately called #Starz – came to a close Friday (May 1) with the premiere of the long-awaited ‘Baby Mama.’

A toast to women doing it for themselves, the Hit Boy-produced bop features a slamming verse from Chance the Rapper – a cherry on top of an already delectable sonic serving.

Was it worth the wait? Listen inside and let us know:

See the lyric video below:

The tune’s official accompanying music video is scheduled to premiere Monday, May 4.

  2. Jec2 April 30, 2020

Ugh. I wanted this to be good. fantasia’s baby mama is so much better. Brandy’s voice and harmonies are still ?

  3. Chileplease April 30, 2020

I like the song…but I also think the first single should’ve had a universal topic. She sangin though.

Sis the song is about appreciating your kid for everything they bring to you as well as appreciating your child’s other parent for the good and bad. This is like the epitome of A universal topic as most ppl are from split up parents.

      • Chileplease May 1, 2020

Well it’s mostly youth who stream music, so I think it should’ve been something they can relate to. This is not relatable. I wish her the best though. I want to see her succeed.

      • Chileplease May 1, 2020

Also, this song isn’t from the child’s point of view, it’s from the parents point of view. Most kids think their parents are old and out of touch and this song put her in that category.

Why would a woman in her 40’s make a song for kids in their youth? Makes no sense at all. She is a grown woman making music for people in their 30’s and up

    Cute!

  5. IG: mixedboy April 30, 2020

I love Brandy but this feels all over the place. The flow of the song is off.

    • eric May 1, 2020

You’re right. The lyrics are too busy and the words don’t flow. Seems like a lot of people don’t hear how disjointed it is.

  6. Around the way filet April 30, 2020

    chance verse straight fire?

  7. Mr RCW April 30, 2020

I was really hoping for more. I give it 2 out of 5 stars. Chance was the best part ??‍♂️

  8. ??‍♀️Jazzy Da Bi Asian ??‍♀️Not ? TROLLmine ??‍♀️Nor ? TRASHmine April 30, 2020

Yes this song is bomb and she is KILLIN it!

Well I’m pleasantly surprised. The title threw me for a loop at first but it came together well. Her vocals and the arrangement on here are everything. Overall it’s a fun/uplifting song that we can bop to. Chance’s verse is the icing on the cake. I think people have gotten so accustomed to the slow trap alternative R&B music that everyone’s doing. We must remember Brandy did that sound a long time ago. I appreciate how she always brings something different to the table. This is far better than the Let Freedom Ring joint she released a few months ago.

    • Jeans May 1, 2020

I agree. I like the song. Chance’s verse is fire? But everyone seems to be releasing something right now so I’m afraid it may get buried underneath. I hope I’m wrong.

I LOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEEEE BRANDY there is not one song (unreleased included) that I don’t love. However for me the issue with this song is it’s not mixed and her vocals are not engineered like they are supposed to be. Her layering is iconic and needs to be mixed as such and if you have someone who won’t take the time to appreciate the honor it is to mix her boxcars properly then they sound all over the place. Whoever mixed Human needs to mix this project. However can’t wait to see the video

    • Only Facts May 1, 2020

Human was her worst album. And remember, brandy is independent now so she’s doing this all herself pretty much

      • Interac May 1, 2020

Human has some of the best songs brandy had ever recorded in career.

  11. Pat May 1, 2020

    Luv brandy. Don’t luv this

  12. Cmon B May 1, 2020

    No B! Nooooooooo!

    C’mon B! This aint it

    Nope. Nope. Nope.

They called me a hater in her other post because I said Brandy’s sound is dated. She can sing this is a given. She needs to reinvent herself musically. This song sounds like an outtake of 2/11. Brandy is one of those artists that really needs an executive producer to give her a sound. Just like JJ&TL do that Janet and BF&LA do that for Toni. She really burned bridges with Rodney Jerkins because he always bring out her best work; she blamed the Human album’s failure on him–saying he didn’t give her his best work. That was a damn good album. Good albums flop all the time (Jasmine Sullivan – Reality Show should have sold crazy #’s and cleaned up @ the Grammys). I agree her song with Daniel Caesar deserved a video.

    • Eman08 May 3, 2020

Executive Producer’s have nothing to do with the creative process of making a record. That’s the Record Producer’s job that helps bring the song to the next level and making sure they are getting the right engery and vocal performance out of an Artist. They oversee the entire production, collaborate with writers, musicians, the vocalist and may arrange the music like Quincy Jones. An Executive Producer oversees the recording budget and secures the funds for the project. Rodney Jerkins is a Record Producer that not only programs the instrumental track but produces the the record in the studio with the Artist. A Producer helps realise an Artist’s vision.

  14. Interac May 1, 2020

It’s rare that I don’t feel a Brandy song but this is a miss for me. I think it’s the writing and production, Just like ‘freedom.’ I’m a fan so it might grow on me. She’s teased so many better sounding songs than this over the last 7 years. That ‘hate it that you love me,’ ‘more than a friend,’ ‘melancholy,’ or ‘I need some time,’ all sounded more promising than this.

  15. Haterz Gon‘ Hate May 1, 2020

Yasssssssssssssss ?????? IT KNOCKS. Just what I needed from her: 1. sounds current without chasing the tired trap beat trend giving us Bran Bran 2020 2.Lyrics are relatable and vocal was classic Brandy 3.Chance’s Bars were ???? and NECESSARY.

B-Rocka is coming for the top of the Billboard R&B charts, at this point no other chart really matters ?

  16. Keith May 1, 2020

On first listen, i liked it but didn’t love it…as I wanted to. The Chance verse definitely brings the energy up. Perhaps the video will increase my affinity for the song. I kinda wished she had just dropped an album or EP because I want some new Brandy tunes so I could skip this one. We shall see…

  17. Bravo!! May 1, 2020

    I like it.

  18. MsMay May 1, 2020

Oh Brandy, naw. This is a mere album track. But we shall see this video tho. I did love Freedom ring and Beggin and Pleading more actually.

  19. Jackx May 1, 2020

I wanted to love this so bad. But something is off here. It’s not an easy listen to busy for me

  20. dee May 1, 2020

Brandy really! This is lame. Go back in the lab.

  21. PinotNoir May 1, 2020

Kudos to Brandy for taking the stigma off of single moms, one night stand kids, IG thots a paternity test robbed of child support, and women with 5 different baby daddies unable to get a date on Plenty Of Fish. Oh, and Tamar and Mariah and Céline who insist on calling themselves single mamas. 🍵

  22. Erica May 1, 2020

    Kelly Rowland-1
    Brandy-0

This is not what I was expecting it’s not horrible tho

  23. Only Facts May 1, 2020

    I actually really like this!

  24. NextB May 1, 2020

I must admit that I’m disappointed, I was expecting something else. Maybe this song needs to be listen a couple of times to appreciate it, I don’t know but for now I don’t feel it at all, sounds too messy for me.

  25. blackshwan May 1, 2020

I need to pick a new favorite singer. This feels like a bad practice run for the greatness we know she’s capable of. She should do an album of obvious hits to remind us. Save this stuff for the die hard fans. I’m no longer one of them.

  26. Steve May 1, 2020

Brandy is amazing. This song is okay. She deserves to be a high priority at a major label.

  27. Chileplease May 1, 2020

Brandy really needs a song like Ella Mai’s “trip”. She wouldve blown that out of the water

  28. trippy May 1, 2020

Sigh. This is tough because I love brandy. She’s been letting us down lately. She needs a better team or someone else to make single decisions…. she has all the potential (still) and it’s just not properly utilized.

  29. PinotNoir May 1, 2020

Brandy on Mama as 1st single: “I was just trying to like get as many songs done as possible.” Explains it.

  30. AJ May 1, 2020

How is this supposed to be artistic freedom or follow on from Freedom Rings or Begging & Pleading- both tragically awful records but completely different from each other two. There’s no way this is on par with Human or Two Eleven. This sounds like a dated remake of Put it Down with lyrics written by a pubescent teenager.
