As widely reported, ‘Black Is King’ is driven by the music housed on the diva’s critically hailed compilation ‘The Lion King: The Gift.’
Billed as a love letter to the Motherland, the dynamic project teamed Bey with a number of major names from the African diaspora – many of whom appeared on he companion film.
Following the July 31 release of the big budget production, the sales of ‘The Gift’ (fuelled by a freshly unwrapped deluxe edition), climbed to a new peak of #7 on the UK’s Official Compilations Chart after registering a 772% spike in sales.
The news comes after the LP rocketed back into the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

So deserved! For us, the project remains a standout in Bey’s catalogue and fuses the fresh (Afrobeats) with some of the tried and true elements that make her the legend she is.
‘The Gift,’ in many ways, is the album yours truly has wanted from Mrs Carter since ‘4’s flirtation with such sounds (see: ‘End of Time,’ ‘Run The World’) and her later tease with ‘Grown Woman.’
Heading into the B7 cycle, we’d love to see her continue to embrace these sonics as she maps out her next musical adventure.
