Keri Hilson is opening up about the drama that ran the risk of derailing her career.
As widely reported, the singer appeared to take jabs at Beyonce on the remix of ‘Turnin Me On’ and later went viral for refusing to hold a magazine with the star’s image on it.
The backlash has seen Hilson targeted in earnest by fans of Queen Bey, who remain unrelenting in their critique of her over a decade later.
Now, in a new interview with Fox Soul, the ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ performer addresses the matter head on.

Speaking with host Claudia Jordan, Hilson makes clear that she was young, impressionable, and at the mercy of forces higher than her who encouraged her to make wrong choices. Namely her dig at Mrs Carter.
Naming Beyonce by name, she didn’t skirt around the issue. Instead, she also took accountability – adding that she understood why fans were angered.
Confirming that she’s now free from said entities, she expressed the hope that audiences would get to know her own her own terms.

You can’t provoke people and then cry when they come after you. 🙄 That being said, I don’t think it was all her fault. It was a terrible move by her label to try and continue putting women against each other and it backfired, for her at least. On the other hand, She should’ve said no (it’s not like she wouldn’t have other opportunities, she was a very successful song writer). You can’t go around stepping on peoples toes for literally NO reason other than to get attention.

The girl Keir was legit a factor and had the juice to be a top tier performer. If she would’ve kept going she could easily been top three or two.. She literally finished Ciara odd. I’m conflicted…on one hand, I have to give Keri her props because she was really onto something for a little while with her career. Her pen game is strong, and I will forever associate her with being part of the Pop perfection that was the “Blackout” album by Britney.
On the other hand, I feel like she didn’t take full responsibility for her actions at that time, and it made her come across a certain way. While I understand the fact that she was a newer artist at the time played a factor into some of the decisions she made, at the end of the day, she is the “face” of her brand and her career. If people behind the scenes were forcing her to start some mess, that’s not ok, but she should have owned it and come out with that information a long time ago. Whatever legacy she was attempting to create will now be forever tied to drama, which is unfortunate. I re-listened to her 2nd album a few months ago, and instantly remembered why I was a fan back in the day. But then I also remembered that interview she did where she was asked to hold a magazine with Bey and Jay on the cover and she said “I can’t do that” when other artists did so without feeling a way. I think at that time she might have been feeling herself a lot, and it showed through her actions.

2) Write as many songs as you can for the new generation of singers in EVERY GENRE. Try to sell them.
3) When all else fails, pull a Sia and take all of those DEMOS and create an album. We all loved how you mimicked Rihanna in “Turnin’ Me On,” so it won’t be hard to recreate that ‘magic!’
4) Go the Chris Brown route and release about 3 singles before your album drops. By the third one, you should be popping enough to release. Have features. You should do at LEAST 35K in the first week. And that all you need these days.
