Mariah Carey seems poised to end the year just where she began it: at the top of the charts.
Since streaming started impacting chart placements, the popularity of holiday-themed music has been more accurately represented on the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 due to its heavy consumption over the last two months of the year.
No artist has reaped the benefit of that update more than Carey, who has seen her enduring yuletide classic – ‘All I Want for Christmas’ – bound into the single chart’s upper half every year since the Billboard change.
Hitting #1 to historic measure at the end of 2019 (as we reported here), the tune is well on its way to doing so again this year.
See what we mean inside:
Hopping from #14 on last week’s tally (as we reported here), ‘Christmas’ climbed to #2 on the refreshed Hot 100.
Held at bay from the top spot by 24kGoldn‘s Tik Tok-fueled hit, ‘Mood,’ the commercial performance of Carey’s tune was powered by an uptick in streams over Thanksgiving week – a trend expected to continue thanks to support from her recently unveiled Apple TV Christmas special.
See the numbers breakdown below:
- Streaming: 26.4 million streams
- Digital Downloads: 7,000 downloads
- Radio Airplay: 24.5 million audience impressions
