Chance The Rapper has long marched to his own beat and blazed quite the trail in the process.
It’s a trajectory that continues with ‘Magnificent Colouring World’ – a concert film the multihyphenate star has premiered in theaters across the globe.
Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie chronicles a secret concert the MC staged in 2017 in the wake of his three GRAMMY wins for ‘Coloring Book.’
That Grape Juice‘s Samuel Eni caught up with Chance in London at the International Premiere Screening.
During the exclusive interview, the Chicago native opened up about his motivations for the film’s cinematic arrival, new music, and more.
Check it out below…
That Grape Juice (Samuel Eni): What was the inspiration behind launching the film in theaters?
Chance The Rapper: Well, I grew up going to the movies, always. So that was just a pastime of mine. Like, me and all my friends. Or even when I was a kid; me and my dad would go at midnight to go see a ‘Harry Potter’ movie or something that had just come out. Film has always been a big thing for me. And I feel like there’s just a disconnect when stuff comes out sometimes and it’s just like on your laptop. It’s not the same.
That Grape Juice: Interesting point…
Chance The Rapper: So, with this, it’s an experience. With this, we’ve come out, hosted fans, and nobody is gonna forget that sh*t. Having an experience is valuable.
That Grape Juice: The film, of course, centers on your live performance. Who are some of your live inspirations?
Chance The Rapper: Obviously, Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Usher, Freddie Mercury. People don’t really ever talk about how incredible Lauryn Hill is live. Like she’s amazing, one of the greatest. Like, I don’t know, I grew up really just watching Mike. Michael Jackson. I saved all the DVDs, all the VHS’.
That Grape Juice: Did you have the white gloves?
Chance The Rapper: Yes! I have white gloves. I had the f*cking sequin socks. I love MJ.
That Grape Juice: You do so much in music, TV and film. What other goals do you have that you want to achieve?
Chance The Rapper: Man, outside of those three things, I really don’t have any other goals. Those are like the main three professionally. I guess, personal tip, it’d be like raising my kids. In terms of like other professions, honestly nothing really other than those three things. They’re keeping me busy!
That Grape Juice: We hear you.
So, we’ve heard a few new tracks and your pen is even harder now. When are we getting the next project?
Chance The Rapper: Man, I guess, sometime soon. I really don’t know. I wish I knew the answer.
That Grape Juice: You’re working on it?
Chance The Rapper: Yeah, I am making music but I’m not like I’m on like an album roll-out…yet. Like, that’s like a whole different mode. So, I’m just making music. I’m just making stuff. That’s like my vibe right now.
That Grape Juice: Who are your dream collaborations today?
Chance The Rapper: Have you ever heard of Teezo Touchdown? He’s from Texas.
He’s just, he’s eclectic. He’s like an Andre 3000. He does a lot of different stuff. Very cool.
That Grape Juice: What are some of the biggest lessons that you’ve learned being on this journey, doing things your way, being independent?
Chance The Rapper: The biggest lesson I learned is like: “Ain’t nothing to it, but to do it.” I’m in London right now at my movie premiere. And that sh*t just like, I don’t know. If only you knew how fake all the sh*t is. I would have finessed everything. I shouldn’t even have a movie up. It’s all just like, just do it. Just execute.

Love Chance.
I hope he gets his moment of ‘talk to me nice’. Right now feels like there’s a lot of jealousy around him and a lot of t-painin going on. I hope he recognises it for what it is and continues to push forward with his music.
