The Pop Stop: Charli XCX, Ava Max, & More Deliver This Week’s Hidden Gems

Published: Saturday 6th Nov 2021 by Ryan

Readers of That Grape Juice know how passionate we are about music – whether that be past or present.

However, unlike our other segments – Retro Rewind, TGJ Replay, and From The Vault – The Pop Stop is the most in-depth look at Pop songs that may have flown under the radar over the last week that you should know, rather they be from music’s biggest stars or those on the rise.

This week, we want to highlight cuts from Charli XCX, Ava Max, ABBA, and Arden Jones.

Join us inside…

Charli XCX – New Shapes

Serving as the second single from her upcoming ‘Crash’ album, Charli XCX once more delivers a synth-heavy tune. However, this time the song’s lyrics are a bit different from others, as they focus on her lamenting over her inability to truly let her significant other in. Bringing along Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek for the ride, the group creates yet another example of pop excellence.

Ava Max – The Motto

Serving as a spiritual successor of sorts to 2020’s ‘The Business,’ Ava Max has teamed up with EDM megastar Tiesto for their latest song. Built on a groovy bass line, gripping vocals, and clapping synths, the pair successfully blends their own unique styles for a a pop banger that will surely become a club staple.

ABBA – When You Danced With Me

Hailing from their exquisite album, ‘Voyage,’ ABBA continues to dazzle with their latest track ‘When You Danced With Me.’ In typical ABBA fashion, this song is built around energetic synths, a steady beat, and glorious harmonies. However, this song differs in the fact that there is a strong Celtic influence with the hints of flute throughout. While ‘Voyage’ may be their last album, songs such as this prove that it may very well be their best.

Arden Jones – Either Way

Alternative artist Arden Jones is back with his latest tune, the catchy ‘Either Way.’ A song about perseverance and hope, ‘Either Way’ reflects this message in the production with it being constructed from energetic vocals, tambourine, and an infectious beat. In short, Jones has constructed one of the feel-good songs of the year and one that stands as an essential for lovers of indie-pop.
