Mary J. Blige stunned music lovers in December when she released a duo of comeback singles to kick off the era attached to her long-awaited 15th studio album.
Titled ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’ and ‘Amazing,’ the former tune would go on to top Billboard R&B charts while the DJ Khaled-assisted latter – though well-received on the critical front – failed to impel the impact of its parent album’s title track.
Could the tide for the braggadocious cut have been different if the original vision for it came to fruition?
Rihanna hasn’t released a studio album since 2016’s ‘Anti,’ but – as evidenced by Saweetie, Megan Thee Stallion, and others – she’s still in high demand as she is regularly listed on many artists’ collaboration wishlists.
According to Eddie Fourcell, the A&R for Mary’s label, the Hip Hop Soul Queen was among the many interested in a feature from the bad gal.
In an interview with our friends at RatedRnB, Fourcell revealed the STREETRUNNER-produced ‘Amazing’ was envisioned to feature vocals from a female guest star. Although the interviewer suggested a Beyonce-assisted remix (since Queen Bey and Blige had already collaborated on the critically underrated 2011 tune ‘Love a Woman’), Eddie said the team had another top diva in mind.
“I guess it’s a possibility,” Fourcell said of a future ‘Amazing’ remix. “To be honest with you, when we spoke about collaborating with anybody for the song, it was more so Rihanna because it has such a Caribbean sample. So that was discussed — not really Beyoncé…”
While the dream didn’t come to pass for Mary’s current project, there’s still hope as Rihanna recently promised her new album is in the works and MJB confirmed she’s already plotting her next-effort – a new album entirely produced by Dr. Dre.
