Nick Cannon made headlines Valentine’s Day when he unexpectedly released the new song, ‘Alone,’ in which he – in no uncertain terms – proclaimed his undying love for his ex-wife/Pop icon Mariah Carey.
After the gesture garnered mixed reception, especially from a number of Carey fans (affectionately called #Lambs), Cannon took to his daytime talk show to clear up any misconceptions.
Look inside to see what he said if you missed it:
On the Wednesday edition of his show (February 16), Cannon confirmed ‘Alone’ – which samples Carey’s #1 hit ‘Love Takes Time’ – is actually the lead single from his forthcoming mixtape.
And while many assumed the tune was his attempt to win Mariah back, he confirmed he doesn’t think that’s an option.
“Everybody was saying that this was my song to try to get Mariah back. I know that’s impossible,” he said before later adding, “The song wasn’t really about trying to get her back. It was taking ownership of what I did as a man and owning my flaws and expressing it through song.”
Part of that ‘ownership,’ according to the rapper-actor-talk show host, is acknowledgement of his role in the dissolution of the relationship.
“The song is really about reflection, the process of when somebody, and men we do this a lot, where you realize ‘I really messed up I had probably the greatest situation.’ I had my dream girl, and I messed it up.”
Later in the segment, the father of 8 earned a few jeers when he praised Kanye West for his attempt to get back his ex-wife Kim Kardashian – endeavors that some have categorized as harassment and threatening.
‘I salute everything Kanye is trying to do; get your woman back man,’ he said.
