Predictions Are In: Mary J. Blige’s ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’ Set To Sell…

Published: Thursday 17th Feb 2022 by Rashad

Mary J. Blige followed her 2017 album, ‘Strength of a Woman,’ with the longest break between LPs of her career to date.

And though she filled the time with garnering critical acclaim and award nominations for her work in film and television, the Hip Hop Soul Queen never stopped promising new music – a pledge she made good on with the February 11 release of ‘Good Morning Gorgeous.’

Kicked off by the Dave East-assisted ‘Rent Money,’ the DJ Khaled-assisted ‘Amazing,’ and the song ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’ (which peaked at #2 on Billboard R&B charts), anticipation for the project was only outpaced by excitement for her involvement in the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show (February 13).

In conjunction with the Super Bowl spotlight, Mary hit the promo trail running in support of ‘Gorgeous’ via a number of high profile outings on Web and print including ‘The Breakfast Club,’ ‘On Air with Ryan Seacrest,’ ‘Ebro in the Morning’ (Hot 97), ‘The L.A. Times,’ and more.

Look inside to see how industry analysts predict that support will impact the first-week sales of the album.

Mary J. Blige’s ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’

Predicted First-Week Sales (SPS):  22,000 units

Predicted First-Week Sales (Pure):  13,000

Predicted First-Week Billboard 200 Placement:  #14

Though Blige did soar to the top of digital charts just a day after ‘Gorgeous’ made its debut, industry analyst predict the bulk of her first-week sales will come from physicals – a common occurrence among acts whose peaks predate the streaming era.

And though its projected inaugural sales of 22,000 come as Mary’s lowest to date, she is still guaranteed a top 20 placement on next week’s Billboard 200.  In fact, as a true testament to her staying power, ‘Gorgeous’ – which arrives nearly 30 years after her 1992 debut album ‘What’s the 411?’ – is anticipated to be the only new album to enter next week’s top 20.

Until we find out exactly where ‘Gorgeous’ will land on the album chart (and the full impact the Super Bowl had on sales of the project), click here to stream it.

20k ain’t staying power. Even ciara pulls more than that. Americans are ageist. The kids would prefer to listen to mumble rap like dababy, lil baby and rest of them $ store rappers.

    • Farrah’s Luggage (8k Camila) February 17, 2022

STFU. Ciara’s beauty marks album debuted at #87 on billboard with less than 10k sales. Mary is a legend. Ciara is a football wife who does music as a hobby

    • MurryJ February 17, 2022

30 years in the game, still being relevant at 51 years old. Millions sold. Classic songs and albums that redefined the culture. That’s staying power BUM. Cierror could never. Y’all b****** are dumb.

  2. Pat February 17, 2022

She’s released too many albums the latter part of her career. It became less of an event. Her catalog is set tho

The Album‘s quite boring, that‘s why the gays are Not listening. For me, personally, it gives nothing. Not much drama, emotion or fun. Its more elevator music to me

  4. Dc February 17, 2022

After 8 multi platinum albums 11 went platinum on her 15 Th album now she prob don’t give af Beyoncé Toni Mariah Rihana Adele nobody has first 8 albums go multi platinum nobody female urban or pop singers so y’all can laugh and go back n forth let me know when y’all faves get to 15 albums I’ll wait f u k b i t c h e s

    • #TheTruth February 17, 2022

Well Mariah has 13 studio albums + 2 christmas albums + the remix album (that I’m counting since it’s mostly re-recorded vocals).

That being said, I agree with you, her career is rather underrated. She’s had hits here and there internationally but she never became huge like Whitney, Mariah…
I understand that at this point, she doesn’t have to bother about commercial performance. It’s just a bonus.

  5. Still Over It February 17, 2022

LMAO these pitiful ass numbers. Not even the Super Bowl could help her non singing drunk ass. Vocals drenched in melodyne throughout the entire album. I’ll give it to her thooo 30 years in the game. She’s a legend , sales don’t matter anymore but Dc dumb ass tried to come for summer walkers sales LMAO!🤣

    • Dc February 17, 2022

Let me know when summer get to 15 albums and still do HUGE numbers y’all gassing up a b i t c h with 2 albums Mary’s first 8 went multi platinum and 11 certified platinum so when summer can do this let me know summer came and went quick 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

      • Still Over It February 17, 2022

You going out sad over that 22k. Let me know when Mary can hold a note without sounding dry, drunk and off key 😭

    • MurryJ February 17, 2022

Summer WHO? Oh that crazy botched b**** who stay getting shitted on by the same n**** over and over again? Let’s just hope that rat won’t be back on the [senior citizens] pole and cleaning toilets in 30 years.

    • ML February 17, 2022

You all need a lesson. Selling is going 3x platinum. Platinum should not a goal. All these artists are on the totem pole. Summer is trash. Don’t come for the 80s through early 00s. When we sold records during bootleg season.

  6. Farrah’s Luggage (8k Camila) February 17, 2022

Respectable numbers. It’s her first independent album. I enjoyed if. Congrats MJ

  7. marilyn monh-O-E ® 👠(#1 DIVA) February 17, 2022

Tragic! Diva told ya This old h** will flop. I know I’m always right 💅🏾 Suck on that DC🖕🏿🖕🏿🖕🏿These numbers are real terrible considering the Super Bowl is her only mega promotion.

    • MurryJ February 17, 2022

Who cares p**** ladyboy. Mary is a mutha f***** legend. Sales don’t define her anymore. She doing s*** for fun and the love of music at this point. How many classic songs and albums does this queen have… exactly. Grammys…exactly. Millions sold…exactly. Still relevant and killing at 51 years old EXACTLY THOINK YOU. Die slow f***** ass.

  8. marilyn monh-O-E ® 👠(#1 DIVA) February 17, 2022

If she was smart, she should’ve performed at least one new song from the new album. But too bad her time is up, they only allowed her to sing 1.5 songs💅🏾 Just like Lady gaga sang Million reasons on halftime show, the song skyrocketed to #4.

    • Dc February 17, 2022

Mary is on her 15 th studio album you do understand 99 percent of female singers white or black that came out after 1991 have 15 albums so who gives af Mary good making 400,000 per episode on power working on her shows and movies under her production company with Lionsgate her wine brand she owns her boot line coming you think she give af bout billboard hot 100 hits

      • Still Over It February 17, 2022

      • MurryJ February 17, 2022

Brandy pulled 26k first week on her own independent label…Real Queen sh!t!

  11. ML February 17, 2022

This is f****** ridiculous. Clearly artists need to make changes in how they release their music to the public. Mary J Blige one of the highest selling artist of this generation selling 22k. This is a joke. This generation needs to be taught to purchase music. I would agree this album isn’t a thumper but god damn. We shouldn’t be sleeping on Mary. I hate this generation. We are so far removed from loyalty. Don’t expect Beyoncé to pull far from this even with a movie. That won’t cut it this time. Love you, MJB. You deserve more.

    • Still Over It February 17, 2022

This generation ain’t listening to no 50 year old. That’s not how it works. You need to redirect that energy to the 40-60 year old generation…😂

      • ML February 17, 2022

Its not about her age. I have little cousins who listen to her. It’s her rollout. We just dont buy music anymore. The charts man that’s in past. Name some of your favs who went platinum in this streaming day and age. Drake isn’t gonna making much.anymore either after a while. Kanye better hope and wish.

    • Theman February 17, 2022

It was the role out. They based this album around the Super Bowl. They should’ve had her on morning and night shows, on billboards, they should’ve let her song grow more on radio. They could’ve also worked on play listing for her, more media promo as well.

Good Evening Flop! I get tired of Mary using pain to try and sell records. It’s played out!

    • MurryJ February 17, 2022

What do y’all want? One minute y’all want her sad the next happy! I see nothing wrong with her singing about relatable subjects especially if she’s going through it herself. Y’all so miserable. Just say you never planned on supporting and go. Little f*****.

      • Josh February 17, 2022

Girl, shut yo mouth before I kick you in yo back! Don’t you ever in your life come at me like that again! I’ll excuse you this time.

    • Just fine February 17, 2022

Josh stfu your a dumb f a g g it that she could buy twice. Mary IS the queen of r&b soul

      • Josh February 17, 2022

We both like men so don’t play yourself my guy. If calling me that makes you feel better then so be it, but just remember those four fingers.🤣. The album still flopped so you didn’t do your part! Get mad at yourself! Goodnight Flop! 😚😚

  15. Miami Mami February 17, 2022

That’s surprising. I expected Mary to sell more. Nevertheless MJB is legendary. She spent a long time being successful. She’s still out here working and looking f****** good while doing it ok. Just because she did the Super Bowl doesn’t mean people knew she had a new album out. Not like she performed any new music.

  16. Anne February 17, 2022

I’m amazed at the attempt to spin this into a positive prediction. I assumed the Superbowl performance would lead to increased sales but looks like I was wrong.

    • Your Name February 17, 2022

People were downloading her old s***….lol

The same way Bruno and The Weeknd announced their world tours after their SB performances, she should have announced her new album. How else were people supposed to know??

      • True Tea February 17, 2022

        Exactly!

Her NEW music simply doesn’t sound fresh in 2022. And there is nothing wrong w/ that since she has remained true to her fans.

  17. True Tea February 17, 2022

None of her singles created any anticipation for her NEW album. Furthermore the younger R&B girls have completely revamped the genre.

Mary’s attempt to reach younger audience was releasing Hip-Hop/Trap Soul music. Sorry but that style of R&B went out w/ Bryson Tiller.

“Thick Of It” had a fresh sound during it’s release. But for the 1st time, her NEW music actually sound dated.

  18. Monica February 18, 2022

She deserve more sales. She’s doing Beyoncé Lion King numbers

  19. Slim February 18, 2022

30 years plus congratulations. Many can’t do it after 10

    • Dc February 18, 2022

Exactly these lil summer walkers n doja and all they faves will never have Mary’s impact and career hell Mary’s first 8 albums went multi platinum can’t many say that

  20. Kendal February 18, 2022

Lol 😂 she flopped so bad. Even Shareefa’s “Point of No Return” sold 28k pure album sales in first week 😂😂😂
MJB is doing K Michelle numbers now

    • 4everBrandy February 20, 2022

She should have just went ahead and did a song with Monica. “Code Red” did better than “Good Morning Gorgeous” in the first week… Its messed up that RCA/Arista Records didn’t get Monica’s vision for herself with their lack of push and support because she had atleast seven Urban AC hits on her last album. “I Know” had some serious cross over potential…but they let the only R&B/Soul legend from the 1990’s they had on their label get away from them. “Code Red” did 35,000 during the first week…compare those numbers to Alicia Keys, Brandy, and now Mary J. Blige. Monica has all that beauty and talent and they deemed her a waste.
