DaBaby is hot on the promotional trail for his new joint album with NBA Youngboy, ‘Better Than You.’
However, with the release serving as his first major offering since last summer’s Rolling Loud controversy, it was always a given that the MC would be quizzed about the chaos while doing the press rounds.
Such was the case on The Breakfast Club today, where the star was asked about his response to the comments he made on stage and the fallout that followed.
His words, which may surprise some, await after the jump…
As a refresher, DaBaby shocked stunned onlookers when he uttered the following at the July 2021 festival in Miami:
“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases, then put your cellphone lighter up.
Ladies, if your p***y smell like water, put your cellphone lighter up.
Fellas, if you ain’t sucking d**k in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up.”
The backlash saw him receive critique from his contemporaries and corporations – many of whom have dropped him from collaborations.
Revisiting the drama with Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee, and DJ Envy, DaBaby said:
“I didn’t mean what you think I meant. What you want me to do? Go look myself in the mirror and say [to myself] ‘you did mean that. You don’t like gay people.’ No. I’m not tripping on gay people. I’m not tripping at all.”
A messy missing of the entire point.
The fact that months removed DaBaby is still rationalizing the matter as people “misconstruing” or there being some kind of witchhunt is equal parts ridiculous as it is sad.
Ultimately, the gripe isn’t so much about whether he meant what he said but more so about the hurt his comments caused a number of groups.
Apologizing in a very “whatever” manner, expecting the world en masse to receive it, and then being frustrated when they don’t is clearly his issue.
