The Pop Stop: Charlie Puth, Carrie Underwood, & More Deliver This Week’s Hidden Gems

Published: Friday 8th Apr 2022 by Ryan

Readers of That Grape Juice know how passionate we are about music – whether that be past or present.

However, unlike our other segments – Retro Rewind, TGJ Replay, and From The Vault – The Pop Stop is the most in-depth look at Pop songs that may have flown under the radar over the last week that you should know, rather they be from music’s biggest stars or those on the rise.

This week, we want to highlight cuts from Charlie Puth, Carrie Underwood, Noah Cyrus, Lauv, Maggie Rogers, and Kelsea Ballerini.

Join us inside…

Charlie Puth – That’s Hilarious

Serving as the next single from his upcoming album, Charlie Puth has unleashed ‘That’s Hilarious,’ a hypnotic recollection of a relationship gone wrong. Complete with layered vocals, pounding drums, and burning electric guitar, it seethes with resentment and anger. While on the surface it appears to be a bitter tune, it makes for one sweet listen.

Carrie Underwood – Denim & Rhinestones

Shortly after announcing her new album ‘Denim & Rhinestones,’ which is due out June 10, Carrie Underwood has shared the title track to the project. Completely ditching any semblance of country production, she makes her foray into the glittery world of 80’s-inspired synth pop. Nostalgic, but fresh at the same time, Underwood has created something timeless with ‘Denim & Rhinestones.’

Noah Cyrus – I Burned LA Down

Noah Cyrus is ready to begin her music journey anew as she quite literally lights her past up in flames. For, not only has she announced her debut album – ‘The Hardest Part’ due out July 15 – but she has also shared the lead single from the album. Entitled ‘I Burned LA Down,’ the tune is a crushing break-up ballad that paints the disastrous end by mixing in metaphors of California and the wildfires there. The prefect combination of country production and pop melodies, Cyrus shows that while she may have left the city, she can never truly escape it.

Lauv – All 4 Nothing (I’m So In Love)

After sharing the spectacular ’26’ earlier this year, singer-songwriter Lauv has shared the title track of his upcoming album, ‘All 4 Nothing.’ Continuing in his indie-pop lane, the tune is complete with ticking clocks, bouncing synths, and grooving bass lines. While the anxiety in the song is palpable, Lauv only proves that sometimes our strongest weakness can be our biggest strengths.

Maggie Rogers – That’s Where I Am

After first catching the attention of Pharrell with her debut single ‘Alaska,’ Maggie Rogers went on to secure herself a Grammy nomination in 2019 for Best New Artist. However, she is back and ready to continue forging her path on ‘That’s Where I Am.’ An eclectic blend of fuzzy synths, vocoders, and roaring guitars, Rogers is back with a roar, a signal to others that this is her kingdom and she intends to rule.

Kelsea Ballerini – Heartfirst

Kelsea Ballerini is back with her first new solo music in nearly two years and she returns in grand-fashion on the euphoric ‘Heartfirst.’ A perfect melding of country instrumentals and pop sheen, Ballerini leads with her heart into a new relationship and finds herself not only a partner, but the breeziest and most-accessible song of her career.
