“You only see what your eyes want to see”
From The Vault is back with a masterpiece courtesy of Pop Queen, Madonna. Today’s pick is ‘Frozen.’
After becoming a mother and taking vocal lessons for her leading role in the movie ‘Evita,’ the entertainer was keen to drive her music and image in a more serious and introspective direction.
Armed with this goal, her Madgesty released her seventh studio album ‘Ray Of Light.’ ‘Frozen’ was its first single.
With its cinematic and atmospheric sonic mise en scéne, it marked the birth of a new Madonna for the world. One which embraced her with open arms.
The William Orbit-produced track was a worldwide hit, peaking at #2 in the US, #5 in Australia, and #1 in the UK.
Chris Cunningham was in charge of visually translating the moody ambiance of the track and let’s just say he hit a home run.
Appearing as an eerie and mystical being, a brunette Madonna – dressed in Gaultier – hovers above the ground in a bleak desert and shapeshifts into various animals.
The visual won an MTV VMA for Best Special Effects in 1998.
This single – as well as its parent album – remains a critic (and fan) favorite and continues to inspire the Pop landscape, as seen with the TikTok-championed release of its trap-infused remixes in recent months.
Polarizing to some, idolized by many, there is just no denying Madonna’s lasting impact nor her powerful ability to adapt and reinvent.
Ms. Ciccone, we salute you. Always.
Frozen is her best vocal track along with crazy for you and take a bow💅🏾
