RIAA: SZA Passes Alicia Keys & Whitney Houston To Become Third Best-Selling R&B Female of Digital Era

Published: Wednesday 24th Aug 2022 by Rashad

It’s been over five years since SZA topped R&B charts with her critically acclaimed debut album ‘CTRL,’ but as music lovers impatiently await its recently completed follow-up they’re clinging tight to her hits of past to tide them over.

Proof of this comes via a slew of new sales certifications announced by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

More inside:

Taking to press Wednesday (August 17), the RIAA revealed SZA saw the certifications of nine of her titles upgraded.

Leading the pack is the Travis Scott-assisted song ‘Love Galore’ which now boasts 6x Platinum status while her single ‘The Weekend’ sits at 5x Platinum (denoting sales equivalence of 6 million units and 5 million units respectively in the United States alone).

See the full list of updates below.

  • ‘Love Galore’ (Single)

5x Platinum

  • ‘I Hate U’ (Single)

Collectively, the aforementioned certifications push SZA’s career-long verified digital sales to 30 million in the United States – making her one of the best-selling R&B female acts of the era.

Passing the current digital sales stats of Alicia Keys (27.5 million) and late icon Whitney Houston (27 million), the only R&B female acts to sell more than ‘Love Galore’ hitmaker are Beyonce (114 million) and Mariah Carey (46 million).

Among all female acts, SZA ranks 16th on the all-time digital sales list following Rihanna (155.5 million), Taylor Swift (134 million), Beyonce, Katy Perry (109.5 million), Lady Gaga (80.5 million), Ariana Grande (63.5 million), Cardi B (52 million), Mariah Carey, Billie Eilish (41.5 million), Halsey (41 million), Nicki Minaj (36 million), Adele (35.5 million), Kesha (35.5 million), Lana Del Rey (32 million), and her ‘Kiss Me More’ co-star Doja Cat (31 million).

Mariah, the only legend in top ten all time women. Still keeping up and the oldest act on top ten list. Now where is that alien shaped face old lady?

The digital era is and will alway be confusing. People selling 5 and 6 million records without the song being too 5 is weird.

As I said before, SZA is my favorite rnb artist of this generation, i’m glad for her. I wonder if she’s really going to release Shirt with Doja but I can’t wait for what’s next

Mariah is really the GOAT. I’m shocked that she’s on this list.
