At the close of last week only 13 albums in the history of recorded music could boast spending 10 full years on the Billboard 200. This week, Kendrick Lamar‘s sophomore LP – the 2012 released ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City’ – joined the exclusive rankings.
More inside.
Released October 22, 2012, the critically acclaimed project celebrated its 10th anniversary with major news from Billboard. Per the refreshed edition of the Billboard 200, ‘City’ was found at #43 in its 520th week of charting – a timeframe that translates to 10 years.
The triple Platinum ‘City,’ which peaked at #2 on the tally at the height of its popularity, boasts contributions from the likes of Drake as well as Dr. Dre and famously features some of Lamar’s most popular songs like ‘Swimming Pools’ and ‘Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe.’
The milestone makes him the first rapper to achieve the lengthy stay with a studio album. The only other Hip-Hop act to see a project last as long on the hit list is Eminem with his first greatest hits compilation album, ‘Curtain Call’ (which is the longest-running effort by a solo artist of any genre).
Also, Lamar joins Michael Jackson as the only Black artist to have a studio album reign as long. Jackson’s iconic ‘Thriller‘ sits at 543 weeks of charting (as of time reported).
Among all artists, only Pink Floyd‘s ‘Dark Side of the Moon,’ Bob Marley‘s ‘Legend,’ Journey‘s greatest hits, Metallica‘s eponymous album, Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s greatest hits, Eminem’s greatest hits, Nirvana‘s ‘Nevermind,’ Guns N’ Roses‘ greatest hits, Bruno Mars’ ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans,’ Adele‘s ‘21,’ Jackson’s ‘Thriller,’ AC/DC‘s ‘Back in Black,’ and The Beatles‘ ‘1‘ have enjoyed longer tenancy on the Billboard 200 than ‘City.’
