Before Pop music lovers learned three of the genre’s biggest names – Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift – had been shortlisted for 2023 Academy Award glory thanks to their respective contributions to 2022 soundtracks, excitement was buzzing for their diva duel at the 2023 Golden Globes.
All listed as nominees in the Best Original Song category, capturing the award would’ve spelled a historic triumph for any of them – especially Rih who would have been the first Black female to nab the honor in 40 years.
Despite being considered shoo-ins for the award, Tuesday night’s ceremony (January 10) saw the ladies’ fan bases erupt after none of their names were called to accept it.

Swift’s “Carolina” (from ‘Where the Crawdads Sing‘), Rih’s “Lift Me Up” (from ‘Black Panther 2‘), and Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” (from ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘) got quite the upset when “Naatu Naatu” – found aboard the soundtrack of the critically acclaimed Indian Telugu-language action-drama ‘RRR‘ – walked away with the Best Original Song honor.
Golden Globe wins have historically been precursors to Academy Award victories in the same category, meaning the divas’ respective fan bases may be bracing to see the defeat repeated.
We’ll find out when the show’s nominees are announced on January 24, then ultimately who goes home with the coveted trophy when the 95th annual OSCARs air live on March 12.
