Hot 100: The Weeknd & Ariana Grande’s ‘Die For You (Remix)’ Makes Record-Shattering Jump to #1

Published: Monday 6th Mar 2023 by Rashad

The Weeknd‘s sleeper hit, ‘Die For You’ (2016), had already awakened interest in a new generation of fans thanks to a viral response on Tik Tok before Pop princess Ariana Grande added her vocal gems to its remix.

Now, the ‘Starboy‘ hit has shot straight to the top of the Hot 100 – penciling the dynamic duo in the chart’s history books in the process.

Details inside.

Grande may be hard-at-work bringing “Glinda the Good Witch” to life on the movie adaptation of the Broadway classic ‘Wicked,’ but that certainly didn’t stop her from working her magic on the revamp of the Doc McKinney-produced ‘Die For You.’

Here are the numbers that helped power its dethronement of Miley Cyrus‘ ‘Flowers‘ on this week’s Hot 100.

  • Streaming: 32.4 million streams U.S.-based streams
  • Digital Downloads: 14,000 sold
  • Radio Airplay: 81.1 million audience impressions

Reportedly, the tracking week did benefit from the release of multiple versions of the tune (original solo version, Ariana remix, instrumental, a capella, etc.) – all discounted to 69 cents.

Regardless, streaming/download/airplay combo of ‘Die’ not only proved potent enough for a #1 placement (their respective seventh chart-toppers), but also enough to print the names of its performers in Hot 100 record books.

First, the tune – originally released in 2016 – endured the longest trip to No. 1 in the chart’s 64-year history (among traditional releases). The only song to have taken longer to reach the summit is Mariah Carey‘s 1994 classic holiday cut, ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ (which didn’t land at #1 until 2019).

Separate but related to the former point, Tesfaye now owns the record for longest time between multiple #1 hits from one album as the ‘Starboy’ LP also lifted another chart-topper, its title track, to the top of the tally in late 2016.

Finally, Abel and Ariana become the firsts vocalists to see two of their duets top the Hot 100, having previously reigned with 2021’s ‘Save Your Tears’ remix.

Acts That Have Teamed for Multiple Hot 100 No. 1s:
