Hot 100: The Weeknd Tied a MAJOR Michael Jackson Record When ‘Die For You’ Hit #1 This Week

Published: Thursday 9th Mar 2023 by Rashad

The Weeknd consistently proves himself to be the man to beat.

No stranger to seeing his name penciled in Hot 100 history books many times over his 11-year career, the crowning jewel of his major accomplishments is undoubtedly the 2020 megahit, ‘Blinding Lights,’ shining as the longest-charting song by a solo artist in the hitlist’s 64-year history.

This week, in the wake of landing his seventh career chart-topper with the Ariana Grande-assisted ‘Die For You (Remix),’ the 33-year-old (born Abel Tesfaye) finds himself entering the chart’s record books again – this time making history for tying his idol’s longstanding solo achievement.

Look inside to see what title he’s now sharing with King of Pop Michael Jackson.

Nearly two years after the ‘Save Your Tears (remix)’ hit #1 and tied Tesfaye with Pop Queen Janet Jackson‘s longstanding record for landing three chart-toppers over three calendar years from one album (as we reported here), the Tesfaye-Grande reunion puts the Canadian hitmaker side-by-side with Janet’s royal brother.

Before last week, Michael sat in Hot 100 history books as the only solo male singer to have amassed multiple #1 hits from three different albums.  Highlights from his epic discography include ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’ and ‘Rock with You’ (from ‘Off the Wall’), ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Beat It’ (from ‘Thriller‘), and ‘Man in the Mirror’ and ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ (from ‘Bad‘).

This week, the Weeknd joined him thanks to the addition of ‘Die for You.’ Highlights from his prized discography include ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ and ‘The Hills’ (from ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’), ‘Die’ and ‘Starboy (the song)’ (from ‘Starboy’ the album), and ‘Heartless‘ and ‘Blinding Lights‘ (from ‘After Hours‘).

Other members in the exclusive club of hitmakers who have multiple #1 hits from at least three different studio albums are The Beatles, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, The Supremes, and Mariah Carey (who holds the record having claimed multiple #1 hits from 6 different albums).  Elvis Presley is not included in this list because some of his #1 hits predate the Hot 100’s 1958 inception.

      Not really.

The Weeknd learned how to make POP hits thanks to Michael. Not to take anything away from him because he’s good in his own right.
