Exclusive: Robert Finley Talks New Album ‘Black Bayou,’ Working With Dan Auberach of the Black Keys, ‘America’s Got Talent,’ & More

Robert Finley has new music out.

The prominent blues and soul singer has released his latest album, ‘Black Bayou.’ Hot on the promotional trail for the project, he sat down with That Grape Juice to dish about everything from working with Dan Auberach of the Black Keys on it, his time on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ and more.

Join us below for his words on these topics and so much more…

That Grape Juice (Ryan): Hey, Robert. It is nice to meet you. First of all, congratulations on your album ‘Black Bayou.’ What does it mean to you to finally release it into the world?

Robert: Oh man I’m just excited to be able to actually let go of a secret that I’ve been keeping away from my friends and loved ones, what goes on in the dark comes to the light. We didn’t want it to get out before time, great to be able to finally talk about it. And I had this album release party and had all my friends hear the entire album for the first time.

That Grape Juice: Can you give me some insight into the inspirations behind the album, like sounds, other artists, etc.?

Robert: To tell my story. It’s a continuation from the last album, Sharecropper’s Son. It’s a chance to reconnect with some of the musicians on the last album. I know the reality of this album is more in-depth than the other one.

That Grape Juice: You worked with Dan Auberach of the Black Keys on this project, what was it like to work with him?

Robert: It’s great! Dan allows me to be myself, he’s not trying to change me and make me sound like another artist. Everything we do in the studio is raw and uncut.

That Grape Juice: My favorite song from your album is your song  ‘What Goes Around (Comes Around),’ why did you choose this to be a single and do you have any favorite songs on ‘Black Bayou?’

Robert: Well it’s one of the first songs my granddaughter and her mother sang on–it’s like three generations. I chose it as a single firstly because of the title. But if I were to choose my favorite, it would be ‘Gospel Blues.’ I like the line “you worry about your soul and salvation and let me worry about mine.”

That Grape Juice: How do you think your time on America’s Got Talent prepared you for this moment?

Robert: I was already prepared for this moment before AGT, it was an opportunity, just a chance to show America and the world what I was capable of doing.

That Grape Juice: Though you are 69-years-old, you bring a freshness to the music industry, so how has your age been beneficial to an industry that is dominated by younger artists? And what advice would you give to them?

Robert: I said take it when you can get it, get it while you can. My first album of goin’ Platinum!? I don’t know no other way to talk to them but through my music.  Age don’t mean a thing.

That Grape Juice: I know you just released new music, but what can fans expect in the future from Robert Finley? Any collaborations, a tour, or other ventures?

Robert: By the time this interview airs I will be on tour somewhere in France. You can follow my social media accounts for updates. My team pretty much handles all that. But to all the folks out there–You can just Google me baby! lol.
