Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has yet to drop her anxiously awaited debut studio album but she already boasts a history-making Hot 100 #1 hit (‘Wait For U’ with Drake & Future), a global top 10 smash (‘Essence‘ with WizKid), and her own #1 hit on R&B charts with the breakthrough effort ‘Free Mind.’
As the latter continues to enjoy gains on streaming and digital download outlets, it’s been recognized for its commercial performance with a plaque from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Taking to press Wednesday (October 4), the RIAA updated its logs to indicate Tems had collected her first two awards: a Platinum plaque for ‘Free Mind’ and a Gold plaque for ‘Higher.’
The former certification marks sales equivalence of 1 million in the United States while the latter denotes 500,000 sold in the same territory.
At the height of its popularity, ‘Free’ soared to #46 on the Hot 100.
At writing, the Omeiza-produced song – found aboard her debut EP ‘For Broken Ears‘ – remains her highest-charting hit to date.
