Mariah Carey Sued Again for Copyright Infringement Over ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

All someone wants for Christmas is for music icon Mariah Carey to pay up for allegedly stealing her holiday megahit, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You.’

Even though Carey had already rolled out her 2023 holiday season plans by the top of the month (e.g. campaigning for Victoria’s Secret and Children’s Place, a nationwide tour, and more), it’s likely fielding yet another lawsuit for her iconic Christmas hit – the second highest-certified female single of all time – wasn’t on the list.

In a complaint filed in a Los Angeles federal court Wednesday (November 1), the 54-year-old diva is facing new accusations of copyright infringement.

Vince Vance (born Andy Stone) alleged Carey’s 1994 hit not only shares the same title and lyrics as a song released in 1989 by the Country group Vince Vance & the Valiants but that there are notable similarities in the tunes’ compositions.

Dedicated fans of Mariah’s, also known as #Lambs, know this isn’t the first time Vance has tried to ruffle the songbird’s feathers. In the summer of 2022, he filed a similar complaint but ultimately dropped the case before the year’s end.

With high-powered attorney Gerald P. Fox on his side this time, Vince is moving forward with another attempt at “justice.”

“…the combination of the specific chord progression in the melody paired with the verbatim hook was a greater than 50 percent clone of Vance’s original work, in both lyric choice and chord expressions.” the claim alleges in addition to challenging Carey’s notion that she wrote the entire song by herself.

At writing, Mariah nor a legal rep has responded to the lawsuit.
