Mary J. Blige Ties Toni Braxton’s Longstanding Billboard Record With New R&B #1 Hit ‘Still Believe in Love’

Published: Saturday 30th Dec 2023 by Rashad

Not even a month after finding out her latest single, ‘Still Believe in Love,’ cracked the top 10 of Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart did Mary J. Blige see the DJ Cassidy-produced cut rocket to #1.

The ascent comes attached to some noteworthy stats.

As previously reported, ‘Still’ – Blige’s Vado-assisted hit that boasts a prominent sample of Mtume‘s 1984 classic ‘C.O.D. (I’ll Deliver)’ – extended the Hip Hop Soul Queen’s record as the artist with the most top 10s on the Adult R&B Airplay listing when it became her 26th song to enter the chart region.

For context, the hitlist ranks the airplay of songs played on urban adult contemporary radio stations.

With its recent elevation, ‘Still’ becomes the 8th Adult R&B chart-topper of Blige’s career – breaking a tie with H.E.R. on the all-time list among females.

In fact, the only other two women to have more #1s on this chart are Alicia Keys (14) and Toni Braxton (11).

Uniquely, Braxton was the first artist to have a chart-topping hit across four different decades (90s, 00s, 10s, 20s) on the Adult R&B Airplay chart – a feat Blige later matched.

Thanks to ‘Still,’ this week saw Mary also match Toni’s record for secondmost total weeks at #1 on this ranking (51). Among women, Alicia is the leader with a whopping 94 career weeks atop the tally.
