Victoria Monét has been named MTV‘s Global Push Artist for December and she’s wasted no time toasting the honor.
For, the 10x GRAMMY nominee took center stage on the platform to rock out to her breakthrough anthem ‘On My Mama’ as well ‘Cadillac (A Pimp’s Anthem).’
Both tracks are lifted from Monét’s critically acclaimed sophomore album ‘Jaguar II.’
Peep the performances below, where the singer-songwriter also opens up about her journey to date…
She did…that!
Check out excerpts from Monét’s accompanying interview:
On what Monét wants her fans to take away from her latest album:
“Jaguar II was an album that was made over the course of four years… The biggest takeaway I wanted people to have with Jaguar II was the dynamic of a female. The dynamic, the diversity, and the versatility and the thoughts that we also have, again that are maybe normalized more so as male… I am hoping that it is something that feels timeless and classic that people will want to revisit in 10 years, 20 years down the line.”
On finding her inspiration:
“Some days, creatively, are easier than others, of course, but I can find inspiration anywhere. Sometimes it’s subconscious; sometimes, it’s something I’ve completely made up and sometimes, it’s maybe one story of this drama from a friend, one story I saw on a sitcom here, like it can literally be anything. I try to look at creativity and ideas as gifts blowing in the wind; if you catch it, it’s yours, but if you don’t, it’ll go to somebody else.”
On overcoming stage fright as a young performer:
“I actually didn’t sing at first. I was more gravitating towards dance because I was really shy growing up, so I thought of dance as a silent sport. In fact, when I used to sing in front of anybody, I used to make them turn around… I would always sing in the shower or places where people weren’t watching at first and then slowly got the confidence to take the stage.”
I want to see a collaboration with Mya.
I’m sick of seeing every black female in music go blonde like they are contractually obligated to do so. I still love Victoria though. She is the one to watch.
