Chloe Bailey on People Discovering the “Genius” of her Debut Album: “It Sneaks Up On You”

Published: Sunday 23rd Jun 2024 by Sam

Sometimes all it takes is a little time.

For Chloe Bailey, that’s the stance she’s embracing when it comes to the reception of her debut album ‘In Pieces.’

Released in January 2023, the set arrived after a slew of buzz singles like ‘Have Mercy’ and ‘Treat Me’ and shapeshifted into a different project sonically by the time of its landing.

Received well by fans, it functioned more as an introductory offering than a commercial tour de force.

And, in a new interview teasing the release of follow-up ‘Trouble in Paradise,’ Bailey says she’s ok with that. Primarily because of the

Full story below…

Opening up about the praise the set has received after marination, the 25-year-old shared with Nylon:

“What I kind of love about my art is that it sneaks up on you. When ‘In Pieces’ came out, not many people really got it. But now a year later, people are like, ‘Oh, it’s genius! It’s beautiful! It’s amazing!’ And if you think about it, that’s how it has been with me and my sister’s previous work as well. No one ever gets it when it first comes out.”

As always, we’re keen to know…

You right. I do be coming on here to be negative and mean. The issue is in my personal life, I’m not happy.

I do not like being as heavy as I am. My family is also an issue. I feel like I’m invisible in society. So I come on here and unleash my anger. I do need to smile more. Thank you for da kindness. ❤️

It was a fun record. Not as bad as some had it – although it had the same weaknesses as her mentor (lyrics/songwriting). She has time to grow and I look forward to her evolution as a creative. Would rather have some cuts (“I Don’t Mind”, “Body Do”, “Cheat Back”) than that “Boy Bye” song from the coming album…

the album had some great production and vocals. it just felt like weird with the lyrics and use of them sometimes that was jarring, I didn’t hear classics that would be played 3o years from now,., for example on ” pray” first lyric. ” f n**** f n**** f n**** “

Hmmm I’d like to see receipts for ‘it’s genius…it’s amazing’. What’s done is done. Here’s hoping Chloe learns from her debut mistakes. So much talent, her team just su c ks. Whoever gave her this much control early on is d u mb as f…..

Pros – Have Mercy at least hit top 30 BHot100 – makes no sense why she didn’t develop this visual concept for the album. I’m not 100% sure but I think it outperformed N’s motivation but that’s not the point. Chloe could have used pop culture nostalgia throughout her album, its not rocket science – scream queens, legally blonde, mean girls, clueless, bring it on etc. etc. Have Mercy is probably her most relatable to date. It’s not even on her debut smh. MV at least features a sporty collegiate sorority nostalgia vibe ….. college/high school letterman jacket etc. etc. / athleisure…meets high fashion (although some scenes literally look like she’s playing Beyonce dress up and weren’t necessary).
Chloe has a great voice, solid range, good stage presence, knows how to produce and engineer, and she’s making an effort to write – but she should let others write for or with her / take the lead.

Cons – In Pieces what was that cover all about???? Have Mercy visuals >>> whatever mess that was. Although she knows how to perform, could have toned it all the way down, way too s 3 x ual this early on in her career. She took a completely different direction from what people were used to hearing from CXH – the general public was only just getting to know her. Chris Brown collab – was that really needed. It didn’t help Tinashe, Rita etc. Bad team, bad management. The songs were all over the place. Where were the catchy hooks…..does she not want to succeed. Like some of the early tracks of Beyonce’s debut.

Chloe could literally have followed the tried and tested formula of successful artists……..play it safe at first, show range, win the approval of the general public…..like……..Ariana, Rihanna, Miley, Britney, Christina etc. etc. Then she could have her blackout / dirty / GGGB / bangerz type era.

Chloe has contradicted herself entirely. If she wants to be a pop girl (why???), at least follow the blueprint. Sabrina Carpenter is gradually making this transition. Aaliyah and Brandy had a similar journey to the others. Anyway, the majority of Chloe’s music she has released isn’t even pop, it makes zero sense what she’s going on about lately. Stop making excuses – its not about race – present a better image and make relatable music.

I actually like her debut album it grew on me and it was experimental and her finding her sound like most artist. And she slayed for the tour im looking forward to the new album since i like both singles FYS and Boy Bye

  8. Diabetes UNBOTHERED June 23, 2024

The was mid then and probably aged to be even more mid today. All 4 of the prior singles released could have elevated the album but chloe payed them dust and mostly bad singles choices. Pray It Away is 1 of the worse songs of 2023. 😆 🤣

  9. Lafitnesssses June 23, 2024

    SHE IS DELUSIONAL LMAO

I will a=bort babies using a fork and spoon.
I will dig up the corpse of Betty White and call it grandma while I F it in the backdoor.

  11. EH June 23, 2024

a lot of her music is R&B/ Neo soul (note not all of her music is.) I get it but I don’t, because what’s wrong with being considered an R&B artist? She does have experimental pop songs. But I think her most popular songs fall into the two categories I listed above.

  12. EH June 23, 2024

What the hell does Chloe think her music is? Those outdated 2000s songs she releases are definitely R&B.

  13. Kendrick Slaymar June 23, 2024

She has a point imo but she’s also the wrong messenger.

The Weeknd is a black Pop artist with now a Pop catalog who is still categorized as an R&B artist. Chloe isn’t. She made a whole album about fµck!ng n-words and being better than them h*** that was R&B for the most part AND she is best known for being half of an R&B group. She made maybe a couple of Pop songs.

  14. Daley June 23, 2024

I agree that black artists are a lot of times unfairly pigeonholed to r&b categories. HOWEVER, the majority of Chloe’s music has been r&b. So I don’t get her specific point

  15. 🍀 June 23, 2024

Let’s make real r&b songs again like Rain by SWV. That song still holds up. Nobody wants to hear Boy Bye or whatever songs she’s been coming out with. Have Mercy was good but i haven’t liked anything else.

  16. Cry June 23, 2024

What a time to be alive. 20 years ago Pop was considered corny by Black artists and it was an insult to include them in the genre. Now, they’re begging to be labeled Pop instead of R&B.

R&B isn’t boring or dated. There just aren’t many artists producing the type of quality content R&B was known for 20 or 30 years ago.
