Rapper-turned-reality star and celebrity chef Trick Daddy whipped up quite the controversy on social media over the weekend thanks to his hot take on racial identity.
At a time where conversations around culture and social politics are boiling (due in great part to the results of last week’s U.S. presidential election that saw the first woman of color candidate Kamala Harris defeated by political polarizer Donald Trump), the emcee’s comments struck a sour note with many.

Taking to social media, Daddy (born Maurice Young) may have kept it a little too real when he spoke openly about his racial identity.
“I’m trying to figure out how ‘Afro’ get in front of my motherf***ing race,” he relayed (as seen in the video above). “I ain’t never been to Afro-ca. I have never been to Africa. Afro or Africa. Never been there. I’m not from Africa. I was born and raised in Goulds, Florida. I was born in Goulds, raised in Liberty City in the Pork-N-Beans projects. Ain’t never went to Africa, ain’t thinking about going there. And I heard it’s a beautiful place, yes. And I know it’s the motherland, yes. But not my mother, not her mother, and not her mother’s mother, that ain’t their land. Americans’ real true land is right here, on U.S. soils.”
Despite garnering mixed reviews from commenters, Young doubled down on his stance which marks the latest in a string of race-related statements he’s rendered over the years including suffering backlash for once claiming Black women were “useless” compared to their Latina counterparts.
Somebody get this man on the next season of Finding Your Roots. Make him the premiere episode.
YOU are dmb as a rock. the roots of white americans are not america. why only black people been refered to by their roots?
You just acknowledged that he is a black man who is being referred to by his roots, thereby affirming that he is African American, but I’m the dumb one?
No he was referring to his skin color. You are really dumb.
He don’t know if he from Africa or Jamaica unless he traced his roots.
Do you call white americans british americans? NO
so he is f right
dmb fkrrrs
America is stupid. All this nonsense African American, Latin American… why does it need to be underlined ? Everyone is a certain nationality with origins.
How would you describe someone from Morocco with pale skin or a white person whose parents migrated from South Africa ? African American then, but people in administration for paperwork would be like “but you ain’t black”.
This is stupid, he has a point.
He didn’t say anything wrong
I get what he’s saying and I while I don’t agree with his choice of words I do agree with the overall sentiment. I am a Black American before I am an African American. My roots are here in America and can be traced back decades upon decades.
Trick daddy needs to called dump daddy, because every black American has ancestors that were brought over here as slaves.
So ? That’s not his point.
I can trace 5 generations that were born in America. No connection to Africa whatsoever. I agree with trick daddy.
