Aaliyah’s Brother Says She Would Be the “Biggest Star in the World” If She Were Still Alive

Published: Friday 17th Jan 2025 by Rashad

Music lovers have always known Aaliyah‘s brother Rashad Haughton to be one of her biggest cheerleaders – a status he still cherishes nearly 25 years after the world said goodbye to the fallen songstress.

In celebration of what would’ve been her 46th birthday (January 16), Haughton took to press to share his elation over the unveiling of Mattel’s ‘One in a Million’ special edition Barbie in her honor – praising the venture by saying his late sister “would be ecstatic to see her legacy celebrated this way.”

“I can see her playing with these dolls wherever she is right now, which I know is heaven and in a beautiful place,” he told ‘People.’ “And she’s going to have a doll with her, and be doing all the dance moves from ‘One in a Million’ with it.”

Keeping the subject on her legacy, Rashad made it very clear that he believes his sister would be among the greats if she were still alive.

“[She would’ve been] the biggest star in the world,” he relayed. “[She had] one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard – still to this day…her legacy continues on. So we can imagine, we can dream, but we still have all those incredible works that she did do.”

Beyond holding on to her “incredible works” (including the forthcoming album ‘Unstoppable‘), Haughton says he also holds dearly to her memory.

“I do often talk to her in times of trouble, or when I’m really missing her. I talk to her in my heart, in my mind, in my dreams,” he said before sharing, “[If I could talk to her now, I would say] ‘I love you,’ and ‘I’m so proud of you’…’I know you’re smiling.”

Even in death she’s still a huge star! I know she would’ve accomplished a heck of a lot if she was still here.

  2. What Would Lil Wayne Do January 18, 2025

    Aaliyah was the greatest dancer
next to MJ of all time. And the most beautiful female music artist in the world.

    • Diabetes UNBOTHERED January 18, 2025

Delusional, not even top 15 in music.

  3. Babycakes January 18, 2025

I’m sorry but there’s no way she would’ve been a huge star. She couldn’t sing. She would’ve been another Ashanti. Nothing more. She’s only still relevant because she’s not here.

    • DaAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa January 18, 2025

She would have been huge! A mix of the stardom of Sade, FKA Twigs, Rihanna and Beyonce.

She can definitely sing, you don’t need to be a power house singer to be a singer, no one till this day has the delicate beautiful and sothing voice as her, and she is a full on entertainer not just a singer, great actor, great style, great looks and she actually has a personality unlike 2024 Beyonce for example.

      • DaAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa January 18, 2025

Annnnd her catalog is one of the best in the music industry, every album is a masterpiece, very consistent!

        Aaliyah albums were MID

Said the one with zero sense of style and taste, sure gurl

  4. TGJuicée January 18, 2025

    I beg to differ.

Production on her songs was top-tier! She sounded off-key on “One In A Million” and her voice was a whisper above Janet’s.

She’s missed, but biggest world star? Nobody in France/Germany knows her. I’d first heard of her in the UK with the Romeo Must Die soundtrack.

Death mythicized her. That’s all, folks.

      • TGJuicée January 18, 2025

        @UNBOTHERED: I salute you.

Disagreed lots with you bout Bey. Not once did you resort to insulting difference of opinion.

Sharing with you is a pleasure. 🙏

P.S. I didn’t know Aaliyah sounded like Shirley Bassey to some Neanderthal ears, did you?

    • Lisa January 18, 2025

Most if not all vocals are autotuned during mixing so it’s unlikely she is off key on it

    • #TheTruth January 18, 2025

It’s true that she started to be really known worldwide with Try Again. She passed away when her career, including acting, was really taking off. She was signed to be in The Matrix for example.

It’s impossible to rewrite history. She could have been big and consistent commercially wise… or not !
Look at names like Christina or even Nelly Furtado. Or Janet. Or Mariah. They aren’t the same type of artists, I get that. But they had huge eras and now commercially speaking, their careers aren’t all that. Yet they still live off of their passion, touring, various contracts and royalties.

A case like Beyoncé still selling out stadiums almost 30 years into her career (counting the release of DC’s first album) and performing well with NEW music, not an old catalogue, is super rare for a solo artist.

Passing away at while being successful commercially speaking intensifies fantasies. She was a great performer in her own lane, she had a beautiful tone. But she lacked versatility in my opinion, but then again, she was still super young when she died. May she rest in peace.

        @#thetruth: all valid points.

  5. Estornino January 18, 2025

Aaliyah was big in her time but no one knows who she could be today. She might have ended up as another Britney knowing what we know now how was her life (R. Kelly and so) It’s sad but she might have retired… or not but she could’ve been another Ashanti or well, another Beyoncé but as I say: nobody knows.

    • What Would Lil Wayne Do January 18, 2025

But Jay-Z wanted to be with Aaliyah but dame dash wanted her to.

    • TGJuicée January 18, 2025

You’re right. She could have died in her sleep before even boarding that plane. Nobody’s privy to God’s plans. And while she could have become Mrs. Carter, I doubt she’d be another Beyoncé; that micromanaging masterful technician of a workhorse was bound to hit big (and she hadn’t, IMO, until Renaissance!) Except for Me Myself And I, Uprade U, Disappear, I Care, Drunk In Love, Formation, Apeshxt, My Power; her discography left me meh… Until Renaissance made me buy the ENTIRE LP. I enjoy even-keeling stans’ hyperbolic adoration of her by pointing out her flaws & all (oooh another fave!), but nobody can touch Renaissance as a concept album. Not better toned Kelly, not butter toned Brandy, and certainly not toned abs Aaliyah RIP. Again, this TED Talk is my opinion.

  6. What Would Lil Wayne Do January 18, 2025

there would be no Jay z x Beyonce. No Rihanna x Drake , cause they want her not them. They loved Aaliyah
    I really really miss her

    • Justme January 18, 2025

What does that have to do with talent? Constantly is brought up about Beyonce and the facts are Destiny’s Child was outselling and out charting Aaliyah when she was alive. Those are the facts

  7. What Would Lil Wayne Do January 18, 2025

    R KELLY loves her

She could have any man she wanted

    • TGJuicée January 18, 2025

Who wants love from a pissser?

  8. TGJuicée January 18, 2025

Nostalgics forget TIMBALAND helmed the Aaliyah sound. After her passing, he recreated that same magic (to varying degrees) with Brandy on Afrodisiac, Timberlake on FutureSeks/LoveSounds, Nelly Furtado on Loose, etc. He even worked some magic with Keri Hilson & Nicole Scherzinger on his own project. And let’s not forget his Missy work. Again, as fab Aaliyah was, impeccable production carried her music. RIP.

    • DaAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa January 18, 2025

She was the taste maker not Tim, she knew how to make the best with the ones she worked with. Look at the work she made with Static and other producers. Look at all her copycats, no one had made anything like she did, not even Brandy or Beyonce, they lack her vision afford-less style charisma and elegancy. She shares a birthday day with Sade and FKA Twigs, it says a lot.

      • TGJuicée January 18, 2025

I agree. All 3 make muzac.

Her being a Capricorn says a lot? Yeah, it says she was OUTRAGEOUSLY compatible with another Capricorn and her astrological soulmate, R. Kelly! That she thought she was a grown-up at a precocious age (what if SHE, in the throes of teenage rush, asked father figure Robert to marry her?) And that she was ready to do ANYTHING to get ahead in the biz (maybe even get peed on?)

Taste maker? Could have made all men of influence get a taste so she could succeed. What if the public sanctified her while, behind closed doors, she was no angel? Can’t speak ill of the dead, but let’s not exaggerate her voice, impact, or legacy. Her most successful albums sold no more than 2.5 mil. in the US when Brandy was selling 5 mil.

To think I used to think Bey offed her.

        SMDH

        RIP

They need to redo her biopic the first one was trash

  10. Neena January 18, 2025

We can speculate on what might have been, but I believe she died how she died when she died by design. Prior to her departure Aaliyah was pretty much on par with her peers (Brandy, Monica, Mya), and they are all far from “biggest star in the world” is all I’ll say.

  11. Ms. Ling Ling January 18, 2025

Get a job, bro. U need to stop milking yo long dead sista💅🏽

  12. Anne January 18, 2025

She seemed to be on the same track as Brandy in my opinion. Both had/were having their run. Whether she would have fizzled like Brany or Monica or somehow grew bigger, we’ll never know. But in my opinion it’s not a sure thing either way and obviously wasn’t meant to be. I agree that her death has led many people to make an uncertain assumption about where her career was heading.

  13. Diabetes UNBOTHERED January 18, 2025

    This man is DELUSIONAL 😭

AALIYAH wouldn’t even be MILEY CIRUS lvl

    Get real. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

  14. Aj January 18, 2025

Let’s be frank, Aaliyah was amazing. But her legacy only continues because of the drama around the label, all the promised and unmaterialised unreleased music, the R Kelly drama and the surrounding rumours about Timberland being in love with Aaliyah.

Its time to leave her alone, she’s probably in her grave knackered. It’s been long enough, don’t release unstoppable (which we know is full of AI)

  15. LiohaK January 20, 2025

    She was mediocre.
