Janet Jackson Becomes the FIRST Black Woman to Place a NEW Hot 100 Hit Over 5 Distinct Decades Thanks to Cardi B’s ‘Principal’

Published: Tuesday 30th Sep 2025 by Rashad

Cardi B‘s September 19-released sophomore album ‘Am I the Drama‘ may have been loaded with celebrity features like Summer Walker, Kehlani, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, and more, but the Janet Jackson-assisted ‘Principal‘ was easily among the project’s most highly anticipated.

Unique to music history in that it’s the first time Jackson has ever contributed her vocals to another woman’s album, the tune is buoyed by a prominent sample and interpolation of Jan’s own 1987 ‘Control‘ smash ‘Pleasure Principle.’

Now, with all the sales of its parent project counted and exceeding expectations, Billboard has finally revealed how its tracks fared on the Hot 100.

Hop inside to see where ‘Principal’ landed.

‘Principal’ premiered at the #92 spot on this week’s Billboard Hot 100. Here are the numbers that powered the placement.

  • Streaming ≈ 5.3 million U.S.-based streams
  • Radio Airplay ≈ 700,000 audience impressions
  • Digital downloads ≈ 800 sold

The entry marks Jackson’s inaugural print on the Hot 100 this decade and comes as her first since ‘Made for Now’ peaked at #88 in 2018.

Etching Janet’s name in the all-genre chart’s history books, she becomes the first Black female artist to have placed a different Hot 100 hit across five distinct decades (80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, 20s).

Among all women, only Madonna (80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, 20s) and Cher (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 20s) can boast the same.

When all Black performers, only Smokey Robinson, Jan’s big brother Michael Jackson, and her cousin Stevie Wonder have landed a Hot 100 hit in five or more distinct decades.

Can we get a post of how Carly broke the record for the most hot 100 debuts in one week by a female rapper? Can we get a separate post showcasing this please? Thank you.

While the song isn’t all that great, CONGRATS to Cardi and Janet. Perhaps if they combine for a video it may pick up some steam, but otherwise it will fade quickly. The Cardi fans are too stuck on “Pretty & Petty” and “Errtime” and the Janet-sampled track “On My Back” is a better song.

Oh so now a sample means a collab.

Did Cyndi Lauper got the same treatment when Nicki sampled her song? Nope

So all u need is to sample someone and give him a credit on the song as if he was fkn singing for the song.

    Tired of this fake BS

Janet literally just breathe in the song

Remember Blue getting a Grammy for being recorded talking as a kid?

    Fk this 💩
