Mariah Carey‘s not one to bite her tongue on most topics, and her complicated relationship with the GRAMMYs has proven no exception.
Having only won 6 of the music industry’s highest honor from 34 nominations over her 35-year career, Carey’s losses at the award show are nothing short of historic – particularly when her 1995 critically acclaimed ‘Daydream‘ album lost out six times in one night.
Just a month after making headlines for calling the ceremony “overrated,” the diva is back in the news for claiming the GRAMMYs “pushed her out.”

Hot on the promo trail in support of her September 26-released new album ‘Here for It All,’ Mariah dropped by ‘Live with Kelly & Mark‘ on the same day to dish on the project, its singles, and her history-making career-at-large.
When referred to as a “such a GRAMMY winner” by hostess Kelly Ripa, Carey quickly made a correction.
“Eh, not really,” the diva quipped about her snubs over the years. “They pushed me out…I’m not being politically correct about it because I really went through a lot with that.”
After Ripa asked if Carey believes she should have more than 6, the Songbird Supreme didn’t answer directly but instead reflected on that fateful 1996 ceremony where she lost out a whopping 6 times in one night despite opening the show with a rousing performance of her Boyz II Men-assisted smash ‘One Sweet Day.’
Elsewhere in the convo, however, Mariah did express gratitude over her BET Award and recent MTV VMA Vanguard victory and eventually concluded by sarcastically remarking “let’s say ‘yay’ for the GRAMMYs and we love them.”

The GRAMMY sentiment was one later echoed on MC’s visit to the ‘Baby, This Is KeKe Palmer’ podcast. Hear her words below.

She’s still bitter about something that happened 30 yrs ago. Tea is she was promised the trophies and that’s the only reason she performed and attended but her peers didn’t vote for her. Y’all too young to remember but back in the 90s critics believed she slept her way to the top and was a studio singer! She was never able to match the sales of her Tommy era! Quiet as it’s kept she still isn’t taken seriously as an artist.
You know this is b.s If she’s not taken seriously as an artist then who is? I’m sure she’s out sold anyone you name. She’s a legend. No shade to Beyonce but she’s kind of the pinnacle for blk female artists and she hasn’t even out sold Mariah Carey.
Baby I was there and remember the critics and public thoughts. It was said that she slept her way to the top and was a studio singer. They said Tommy bought those records and chart positions the respect was not there ! That’s the reason she did unplugged to prove herself.
Even if that was the case at the beginning of her career she’s more than proved herself so to say she’s still not taken seriously is emphatically false.
Beyonce slept to the top with Jazzy Jeff 😭
