Shonda Rhimes and Jesse Williams extended their creative union beyond the realm of ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ to build ‘America Divided’, a moving Epix documentary series.

The docu-series, which Rhimes is producing, shines an uncomfortable yet necessary light on inequality within in education, housing, healthcare, labor, criminal justice and the political system via eight stories fronted by celebrity correspondents.

It premieres on September 30th.

‘Divided’ will make its way to the world months after Jesse Williams delivered a debate-inducing speech on institutionalised racism at the 2016 BET Awards and after Rhimes welcomes the return of the Viola Davis-led ‘How To Get Away with Murder.’

Part of the project’s purpose is to raise awareness for the complex matter that is the Flint Water Crisis and how its victims (predominantly African-American) have been forced to fight their way out of it with little help from the political institutions erected to support them.

The Detroit Free Press explains:

The state of Michigan will bear the full cost of providing supplies for clean water in the city as well as manning eight community stations in Flint to hand out filters and bottled water.

“We have heard from many residents….that there is a deep concern that the federal government and state are going to pack up and pull out of Flint after August 14,” Capt. Chris Kelenske, Michigan’s deputy director of emergency management and commander in the Michigan State Police, told reporters Wednesday. “I’m here to tell you that that assumption is completely false.”

‘Shadow and Act’ adds:

Rosario Dawson profiles the citizen-scientists who first exposed the existence of lead in the Flint water supply; investigates the alleged cover-up; and examines the policies behind the decision to switch the water supply in the first place. She joins residents, doctors, scientists, academics and political leaders in in-depth conversations to find answers to questions raised by one of the worst public health disasters in American history.
