Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we’ll take it back to Destiny’s Child mega comeback hit ‘Lose My Breath,’ the inaugural release from their last studio album ‘Destiny Fulfilled’ (2004). With thunderous drums, slick horns, and an overdose of sass – the song, penned by Destiny’s Child, Rodney Jerkins, Jay Z, Sean Garrett, and Lashawn Daniels – came as a booming announcement that music’s top group had returned with a vengeance. Its video, as noted by critics, was exact in its purpose of demonstrating that a new “Destiny’s Child” had arrived. Long gone were the days of tacky matching outfits with girlish design and in its place were three learned women whose destiny had led them full circle. Whatever the message, it worked.
Anticipation of ‘Breath’ saw it debut in the top 30 of the Hot 100 before its physical release. Shortly thereafter, the song skyrocketed to the #3 spot where it peaked this week 12 years ago. Check below to see who joined them in the top 25 that week:

Aye, the final days of good music… that was a great year in music and MTV, BET and VH1 were still credible… Now, not so much. Alas, I have great memories to a lot of these songs.
DC3 should be Beyonce Letoya and Kelly.
have you ever seen one Bills Bills Bills performance where LaTavia is absent? they look amazing as a trio onstage. but you know Matthew wouldn’t have it cause then Kelly would have to lead harmonies because Beyoncé would have the deepest tone of the 3 of them.
Diversity!!!!! Interesting that there is a correlation between diversity on the charts and sales. I mean that with regards to genre and race. Makes you wonder.
Yesssss Cici!
? @ Your ugly ass talking about “Yesssss Cici”. The last time your Adams apple fav was relevant. Now she’s on her forth straight FLOP album.
You’re CLEARLY pressed and bothered boo. Worry about everybody outselling your talentless goat fav.
? No ugly, worry about everyone “literally” outselling, YOUR FAV.
Once upon a time, the music was filled with lots of diverse TALENT like back in 2004. Now, in October 2016, or the last six years, not so much…
Too many has beens, so many BOPS
Ironic Bey is the last one standing.
I don’t see Beyonce on this chart.
She is selling out TOURS and albums though. Out of all of her peers, who else is really doing the damn thing ?
I see her still getting #1 albums, #1 world tours, awards, top reviews, and praise from her peers/industry. Singles are not a reflection of success. If that was the case Rihanna’s album sales would be higher (without) streams and cellphones purchasing their albums! Rihanna wasn’t even out in 2004, why is Rihanna stains even in my reply box?
You’re the one who mentioned Rihanna lol
Still don’t see “Beyonce” on this chart. Moving along.
Beyoncè received partial songwriting credits for this hit therefore she IS on this chart. Don’t mad because your fave was still thotting around in Barbados…
Why is it ironic that she’s the last one standing When her dad was the manager, and her husband / boyfriend at the time was a veteran in the industry. You’d probably be a huge star to under the same circumstances
Man this was my song back in 2004. Their final album “Destiny Fulfilled” was everything. The ballads, content matter, Kelly solo song “bad habit” & Michelle’s amazing bridges. This was hands down the LAST (awesome girl group album). One day a reunion and new album will happened but in the meantime I will enjoy this nostalgic moment. DC3 Forever!!!!
We need them to come back and completely SCALP the industry!! It’s long overdue!!
Awkward era and album. Songs were quite good but too slow, there was very little to dance to which contrasted sharply with the brilliance and balance of TWOTW, their best album.
Also showed too many flaws that should’ve been ironed out. Kelly was vocally great but inconsistent, Beyonce too overpowering at times and Michelle still unable to “keep up” as the gif above which shows her awkwardly placing her right knee up instead of down like the other 2.
That Soldier song, video and live performance on 106 & Park was also a major trough instead of a peak. Comes down to Michelle really. Could she have looked anymore out of place in the videos and singing about “hood men”?
TWOTW was not their last album, it was Survivor. You a hater. All you did was hate in that whole post. You can save that. Michelle added to DC3’s soulful harmonies much more than her missteps make them look bad. Michelle is a vocal beast which is why DC3’s harmonies are so f****** bomb. Bye hater.
Hmmm he said “best” not “last” and he is right – TWOTW is their magnum opus but that doesn’t mean Michelle is to be f***** with tho
yeeeeeeeesssssssssssss I remember being soooo pissed it never got to #1 lmao this song is such a bop but now in retrospect the whole top 3 is amazing. both Goodies and LMB are on my top workout picks and My Boo is just… <3
I hate feeding into chart nostalgia but as a R&B/Pop fan, early 00s were really the best
So the number one was a different song from pretty big artists and also “urban” artists at that but the headline for this post had to be about Beyonce LOL To be expected from Sam.
And when you see the ”filed under” order, Bleachoncé comes first than her group… LAME.
Lose My Breath is prolly their worst song. Too repetitive. DF had their best slow jams tho..T-shirt? Cater 2 U?? Game Over??? Whaaat!! Pure s** on wax.
That gif though….giving me LYFFFEE for DAYYSSS
Americas top girl Group is TLC thank you.
I still remember Running Men dance to this song like last year and when the song started playing, they were like so excited and said something like ” I know this song, it was everywhere before”. And on the same show, they used “Crazy In Love” and a cover version of Rocket. Beyoncé and DC had so much classics and they are basically my childhood.
17 songs in the top 25 I like from 2004 9 songs in the top 10 except n0 10 2004 and only 1 song in the top 5 in 2016 just goes to show how rubbish songs are nowadays
Wow
