Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we’ll turn the dial back to 2005 and press play on Madonna‘s disco-flavored comeback hit ‘Hung Up.’ The lead single from her 10th studio album, ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor,’ the tune – which samples ABBA‘s 1979 ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ – was written and produced by the Queen of Pop herself (with a little help from Brit-born producer/songwriter Stuart Price). Unveiled at a time where hip-hop and Urban-flavored offerings were dominating the charts like never before, ‘Hung Up’ – drenched in disco – was not only a risk due to its sonic distance from mainstream music, but also because Madge was having to prove herself a viable seller following the failure of 2003’s ‘American Life.’
The risk later proved a lucrative one.
Debuting at #20 this week in 2005, the song would eventually go on to peak at #7 (giving her Madgesty her 36th top 10 single), earn platinum status in the U.S., and lead its parent album to #1 on the Billboard 200!

Madonna has had an iconic career. The hard candy Cd was incredible, the songs and tour were Iconic for her. She has recently fallen off due to bad videos, bad songs, how do you create something so beautiful as BEAUTIFUL SCARS and it not be a single???? she has lost touch with the pubic and that was always her saving grace…….
The fact that she didn’t put that track on the standard edition of RH makes me mad

Confessions and Hard Candy were Madonna’s last 2 d decent albums everything since 2008 has went down hill!

OMG! The “Confessions” era was everything. This woman literally had two or three “comebacks” and this album was her last one, so to speak. “Push” and “Isaac” are such great, intellectually-stimulating songs.
The Confessions era is Iconic, truly her last reinvention, everything was perfect, the looks, the music, the promo, the tour. Madonna’s career/discography was perfect until Hard Candy came into the picture, all of her albums were great regardless of their commercial performance, Madonna, Like a Virgin, True Blue, Like a Prayer, I’m Breathless, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, Ray of Light, Music, American Life and Confessions on a Dance Floor are all iconic and great, those records shaped pop music in one way or another, Madonna truly is the most consistent artist in the history of Pop music, that woman earned her crown with her hard work and determination.

“Hard Candy” was a fantastic Pop record and it’s recurrent sales and streams are much higher and prevalent than that of “Confessions On A Dancefloor”. The album itself was a credible foray into the Urban-Pop sound in which she had then undertaken, sonically speaking; “4 Minutes” is one of her most critically-acclaimed songs (and was her true last successful single) and one of her most referenced to date. Her team could have expanded the era thus making it bigger than what it was but by then she was moreso focused on “The Sticky And Sweet Tour”.

It all started to truly go downhill for her, artistically and musically speaking that is, with “M.D.N.A”.
HC is a good album, just not a Madonna good album, MDNA is underrated IMO, Gang Bang, Masterpiece, Falling Free, Love Spent and I’m Addicted are great, true be told, Madonna hasn’t done a bad album in her career, it’s just that she set the bar too high even for herself releasing masterpieces one after the other, not matter what people say, her recent offerings are on par with the releases of the pop girls, Hard Candy, MDNA, Rebel Heart, it just that Madonna is 58 and that ruins everything for her and the general public.
Excluding the U.S.A (as if it’s the only country in the world), the song was a GLOBAL SMASH-HIT and peaked at #1 in 45 countries including four of the biggest music markets: U.K, Germany, Japan and Australia (as well as Canada and France).

This was Madonna´s last true slayage as s****** blonde said. The last huge reinvention and the last amazing album. She had 4 back to back phenomenal albums from 1998 to 2005 with Ray of Light, Music, American Life and Confessions. Amazing. Add to that what she had already released when she was younger. Hard Handy wasn´t half as good already. And the last two have just been disappointments. But hey nothing can last forever. And boy did it LAST. Such longevity at the top of her game.
