Chart Rewind: Ciara’s ‘Oh’ Hopped To Its Hot 100 Peak This Week in 2005

Published: Friday 17th May 2019 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’re flashing back to ‘Oh’ – the 2005 top 10 hit from R&B diva Ciara.  Meet us inside:

After seeing her debut and sophomore singles, ‘Goodies’ (album title track)and ‘1,2 Step,’ step right to a #1 and #2 peak respectively on the Hot 100 in 2004, then-burgeoning songstress Ciara was charged with the task of keeping up the momentum with the latter’s follow-up from her inaugural album.  To answer the call, Cici and team selected the Ludacris-assisted ‘Oh’ as the album’s third single.

A bass-heavy ode to the singer’s hometown of Atlanta, the tune – penned by the then-19-year-old and produced by Dre & Vidal – may have offered the slowest BPM of her singles to that date, but it certainly packed no dearth of -umph.  Launched to radio in early March 2005, by the month’s end ‘Oh’ had already cracked the Hot 100’s top 5.  A boost undoubtedly fueled by its dance heavy video (seen above), this week that year saw the Crunk cut reach its peak on the tally.  Eventually certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the song remains a prized entry to and fan favorite of Ciara’s impressive discography.  Much to our chagrin, it also remains her last appearance in the Hot 100’s top 5 as a leading act (as of time reported).

Look below to see who joined her in the top 25 this week 14 years ago on this week’s Chart Rewind:

Her first album was her best!! To me her downfall was changing direction so quick instead of staying with sound & building a loyal fan base she moved to quickly & suffer the consequences! This is still the cohesive album from her

In Nene’s voice “don’t tell me what I did back then tell me what I’m doing right now!!!” Aka Ciara only had one album with hits because each song she released had a collaboration, when she started to release songs on her own they flopped. 2019 she still flopping!

Wrong. Promise was a big hit.

This is mind blowing! ‘Oh’ was her last top 5? Omg so ‘get up’ ‘promise’ & ‘lose control’ didn’t make it to the top 5? Those songs were huge and so was ‘can’t leave him alone.’ But you know what it doesn’t even matter really, I reason why I think these songs were chart hits is because of the cultural impact they had, you can still play those songs today, they’re timeless.

What happened to Bobby Valentino? His first album was fire

Hotline should’ve been the next single

It was supposed to be but I forget the reasoning for why it never came to be.

Hotline was like the 1st version of Get Up. I think she should have released either Ooh Baby / Thug Style.

The way she performed “Set” gave a BIG nostalgic feeling! But at the same time, on a modern scale. Smdh.. I know she’s not chasing numbers but the girl will ALWAYS have IT. She needs a team like Beyonce’s. Call it crazy but with her self-titled album, she was really on to something great!
