Anna Wintour Addresses Black Lives Matter Movement / Apologises For ‘Vogue’s Mistakes

Published: Thursday 11th Jun 2020 by David

Anna Wintour has apologised on behalf of her magazine ‘Vogue.’

On the receiving end of the apology? Black artists and creatives.

Her thoughts below…

Weeks after she revealed that bosses at the publication once attempted to stop Naomi Campbell from covering the magazine because she was black, Wintour penned an email to the Black artists she believes were shut out of rooms they deserved to be in.

This, after an editor-in-chief linked to the magazine was spotted mocking the Latino community by sporting brownface.

I want to say this especially to the Black members of our team — I can only imagine what these days have been like. But I also know that the hurt, and violence, and injustice we’re seeing and talking about have been around for a long time. Recognizing it and doing something about it is overdue.

I want to say plainly that I know Vogue has not found enough ways to elevate and give space to Black editors, writers, photographers, designers and other creators. We have made mistakes too, publishing images or stories that have been hurtful or intolerant. I take full responsibility for those mistakes.

It can’t be easy to be a Black employee at Vogue, and there are too few of you. I know that it is not enough to say we will do better, but we will — and please know that I value your voices and responses as we move forward. I am listening and would like to hear your feedback and your advice if you would like to share either.

I am proud of the content we have published on our site over these past few days but I also know that there is much more work to do. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with me directly. I am arranging ways we can discuss these issues together candidly, but in the meantime, I welcome your thoughts or reactions.

Everybody and their mama trying not to get cancelled….. black people drive pop culture we decide what’s relevant and what’s not. All this fake support they’re scared to lose black culture co-sign and black spending power. #Supportblackownedentities

      Exactly.

    • Ugghh June 11, 2020

Fake support is better than no support. Their fake support is building accountability and the process to greater change. They can’t return these public statements, so regardless they have to make change.

The fake support you’re trying to tear down has greater value than your need tear down every apology that has and will be made and your inability to see that’s these actions are profitable results will not help the cause.

Where are you spending your energy and how are you driving momentum for change?

I spend my energy to stopping black people with mentalities like yours by teaching them realities of white supremacy and racism. Black people do not need fake support. Sephora is also participating in fake support by dedicating 15% of its shop shelves to black beauty brands. Now on the surface this all sounds great and inclusive. But what once you scratch the surface you see the millions that black people spend in the beauty industry is not in proportion to the support and visibility black owned brands get from places like Sephora. Sephora is happy to give you a little 15% which is chump change compared to the millions of revenue they will continue to get from black customers. And you think that fake support is beneficial? You’re just happy with being given something to shut you up. Sorry that’s not good enough.

Too little too late, Anna. Andre Leon Talley exposed you years ago…now you want to address the issues? Stop hiding behind that bob.

Those hypocrites are disgusting as hell. Where were your outrage when you had the chance to do something for black people ? May they rot in hell.

I’m getting sick and tired of these companies , who exist for sometimes 100 years, who now apologize for not doing better. Black people and minorities have been around for centuries, don’t act like we exist only in 2020.
When it took beyoncé in 2018, to get the 1st black photographer to create a cover for vogue, it’s hard to sit there and be happy as Vogue been around for a whole century !
    Keep your fake apology ma’am.

That woman is full of herself. I can’t deal with that kind of BS. Those people need a reality check but they are just surrounded by yes people scared to speak the truth.
