Aguilera Apologises For Super Bowl Performance

Published: Monday 7th Feb 2011 by Sam

As earlier reported, Christina Aguilera‘s performance of the US national anthem at the Super Bowl last night hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Most notably due to her forgetting the lyrics of the iconic song.

Perhaps feeling the strain from the media, the 30 year old singer released a statement regarding the performance.

Check out what she had to say after the jump…

“I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

One can’t but feel sorry for Ms. Aguilera. I mean, of all the people for this to happen to (see: ‘Bionic’, divorce, ‘Burlesque’). Sigh. Here’s hoping her fortunes take a turn for the better this year.

    Say what? Apology and Aguilera in the same sentence? *shocker* This is the end of an era!

    They better pre-record the anthem as from now on. There’s no rewind button for whack live performances.

    I swear your blog is a part of the commercial media outlets that sensationalise the most negative aspects of stories to create more fluff pieces and enforce these ideas into the readers’ so they continue to subscribe to your b*******. Instead of reporting facts as they are, you cynically filter for highlights to create headlines. Pragmatically think about the reasons of why your blog is successful.

    LEGENDARY IS NOW LIKE A PACK OF RAMEN NOODLES (FAST, EASY, GOOD BUT NOT REALLY SATISFYING) AND DETERMINED BY HOW MUCH P**** YOU POP/ PING YOU SLING, HOW MANY TWEENS LOVE YOU FOR THE MOMENT, AND A HANDFUL OF ALBUMS. No1 – Christina can still sing and is capable of amazing performances (See “Lift me up” at Help for Haiti and “You lost me” on American Idol) she just needs to get some coaching on how to manage her voice which is the only thing she loses out to compared to Bey because Naturally XTina has the better voice and when she does use it properly she has no competition.

    No2 – “Burlesque” was NOT a flop in any sense of the word, Whorever thought it would make $100m first month (if anybody even did) is dellusional and shouldn’t have been taken seriously it is a MUSICAL not a blockbuster, it has made $81,390,143 and is still being released in countries around the world and still grossing and has been Nominated and Won Golden Globes for it’s music so hardly a flop and DVD sales havn’t even been tapped yet so…

    No3 – @LORRY, PREACH! this site is so hate filled and once things start going that way people only stick around so long, Look at Perez Hilton he used to be huge and now despite his fame whoring he gets a lot less hits because people are tired of his bitching and bashing.

  23. Royalkev February 7, 2011

    I don’t think it was as bad as some people made it out to be. I kind of wish Xtina ignored it, instead of making a statement about it. This year it seems like people are itching to beat up on her. I really feel for her. She’s a very strong individual, but sometimes life can take a toll on you. I wish her well. I know she’s the type of person that will bouce back. She has talent, so she will have her day! As for this performance, it was so so. Still Christina has an amazing movie Burlesque(that she really did well in) and Bionic was nothing to be ashamed of! So I know she’ll turn it all around, because she didn’t lose her touch!

  24. MissImpartial February 7, 2011

    I think she was to proud to prerecord the vocals to showcase her voice which kinda backfired. And I don’t know what was so difficult to learn the words to the song if you know for weeks that you are going to perform the National Anthem.

    Anyhow Burlesque is not a flop it grossed $81,390,143 and that is great for her first movie and it had a Golden Globe nomination. I mean she grossed more than recent Jenifer Aniston movies and Reese Witherspoon and they are seasoned actresses.

    Sam and Trent are kinda begging this movie to be a flop which it is not.

  25. StayFreshYaki February 7, 2011

    Caught up in the moment my ass. They paid her ALOT of money to sing this song. It isn’t even that serious to sing. At the end of the day you have to deliver and she did not. This is why her album flopped and why she isn’t a good performer.

    Girl you should have rub that genie in the bottle to help you through this song. Girl good day. #

  26. liljokerrr February 7, 2011

  34. LinbbyRose February 7, 2011

    I love Christina but thanks to all the over extensive vocal training, consistently screaming & popping veins throughout performances, her voice is fading w/ each album. I’ve been studying Vocal Acrobatics since I was 11 so being a vocalist myself,i know a bit about singing. Basically Christina’s runs are nothing more than trained acrobatics, nothing soulful or heartfelt. She isn’t taking care of her voice & it doesn’t take a genius to hear it.

  35. lola February 7, 2011

    I don’t understand why people are bitching about what Sam and Trent write! If you don’t like it, then leave! How many times do people have to tell you idiots that this is their damn blog and they can write about whatever they want and throw shade at whoever they want! If you don’t like it, tough! If I were Trent and Sam I would block all the stupid ass comments, complaining about them throwing shade at celebrities!

    What was Christina supposed to do? She had to apologize. I wish people would stop saying that she can still sing because it’s obviously that she can’t sing properly/in her range and has no vocal control! She used to have such a beautiful voice, and now it’s strained from all of that yelling. She DERSERVES TO BE BASHED because she’s been a discrete, arrogant, diva for all of these years! Isn’t this the same one who dissed Eminem, Britney Spears, criticized people for using auto tune and then used it herself, and then cheated on her husband with men and women, has a boyfriend before the marriage is up, and admitted to being a prima dona? How could you feel sorry for her? It’s clear that her bad luck is just karma.

    Plusm the reason why many people were mad at her for screwing up the song is because she used that moment to try to show off her awful vocals! How selfish. Chriscrema, this star spangled banner is about America, not your fat, ugly, ass!

    LMAOOOOOOO!!! That was funny! *wipes tears*

    Anywho, like I said before, it wasn’t that bad! Yeah she messed up the words, but it wasn’t the worst rendition of the National Anthem we’ve ever heard. She has sung it before and she did pretty good. Oh, but that note at the end…….no excuses for that!

    Regardless of this flub, regardless of how bad her album flopped or how her movie under performed, whatever she is still one of the best vocalist of our generation even if she doesn’t get credit for it! Sam knows it, Trent knows it and all you asswipes clowning her know she STILL shits on your fave….vocally anyways!

    She really should have apologized for those bad extensions! That was the worst part!

    She apologized for forgetting the words thist wasn’t the worst part ! She should’ve apologized for her horrible vocals I mean how can you pay no respect to your national anthem and sing it like that not even singing screaming !!!!

  39. TheMan4u February 7, 2011

    i agree @Laurie, i think people could forgive messing up the lyrics had she given a good vocal, but everything about her performance was bad and the screaming made it worse.

    they should just replay Whitney’s version at every event

  40. Nichole February 7, 2011

    By “caught up in the moment,” she means she was too busy trying to show off, and not paying attention to the words of the song.

    I disagree with RoyalKev.

    Of course Christina owed America an apology, and the criticism was too strong for her to ignore.

    The backlash she received was well deserved, and I hope they don’t invite her to perform again. Not just for the NFL, but else where performing the NA as well.

  41. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @ Linby who are you to say her voice is “fading with each performance?”

    Are you a professional vocal coach?
    Do you monitor EVERY time she opens her mouth to sing a song?
    What are you basing this on?

    You sound delusional and are a hater!

  46. Prince&Queen February 7, 2011

    Lol @ Nichole she probably was trying 2 show off. But she still young and her voice is still fresh it’s not like her voice has gotten bad like Whitney’s. I know after that performance she is definitely going to run to a vocal coach.

  47. Nichole February 7, 2011

    ^^^Sorry, Prince but Christina’s voice is far from fresh.

    When Mariah and Whitney were 29, they still had it going on vocally.

    Her technique is effed up, and she is in badly need of a vocal coach. Christina is not going to sound like anything in the next 5 years, if she doesn’t start showing some restraint.

    We all know she can sing, so showing off vocally is pointless. This is what Linda Perry was trying to tell her.

  50. the kiddz February 7, 2011

    @Nichole

    I agree 100%. It’s high time her vocals were exposed for what they are: a mess. It’s not even about forgetting the words, her ego has always been a hinderence in her singing. She doesn’t want to accept her natural vocal limits; she is NOT a belter. If her voice was a person, it would be abuse on the highest level. That’s why she’s going through vocal decline at an age where she should be at her peak. Voice of A Generation my ass.

  51. Chile Please!! February 7, 2011

    I knew she messed up the words yesterday I was telling people that but they didn’t even catch on to it.

  52. Prince&Queen February 7, 2011

    I was talkin bout Christina is goin 2 definitely run 2 a vocal coach. She probably seeking one now. @Nichole ure right her technique is whats messing her up. After help from a vocal coach she should be alright. I dont think a vocal coach could even help Whitney though.

  53. the kiddz February 7, 2011

    @Prince

    Christina has had a vocal coach on many occasions. It’s not just her technique, it’s her lack of musicianship. And Whitney doesn’t need a vocal coach; they aren’t healers. A coach teaches you how to effectively use your voice, Whitney’s technquie is flawless but her voice is gone due to her excessive touring, drugs, miscarriages, etc.

  54. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @kidds
    You said Whitney’s voice is gone due to miscarriages??

    How did you come up with that?

  55. Shea Butter February 7, 2011

    Uhhhhhh….Burlesque grossed 81 million; which in terms of cost was a flop. It cost 55 million to make and to break even by industry standards it needs to make double the production cost so that would require the film to make 110million to break even. In addition I don’t believe the 55million production cost included the heavy advertisement budget that went along with this movie.

    but…

    I feel bad for Christina, it has really been a bad year for her, I guess everyone has a moment like this in their career. Time to take a break recalibrate and try again.

  56. Prince&Queen February 7, 2011

    @ The Kiddz ok i agree with u Christina needs all the help she can get to become a Great Musician again.

  57. the kiddz February 7, 2011

    @kelzrowland

    I didn’t say it was the only reason, but a contributing factor. When you have a miscarriage your hormones are in wack, thus affecting the quality of your timbre.

  58. TheMan4u February 7, 2011

    @The Kiddz, Whitney although at her prime the best singer EVER, does not have flawless Technique, ask any vocal coach and they will tell you it was clear whitney didnt have professional training. Even without smoking and drugs she was doing damage to her voice, the excessive touring and the majority of her set list consisted of Power ballads, especially during the bodyguard years.

  59. Prince&Queen February 7, 2011

    @TheMan4U i do think those are some of the things that messed up her voice too. That was the Best Voice then and that would be the Best Voice now. I hear some1 by the name of Charise has the closets voice to Whitney’s now. But she just dont have the beauty to match in my opinion. Im sorry i feel if Beyonce was to sing a Whitney song like I Have Nothing she could sing it jus like Whitney if she really get in2 that song or any other Whitney song. I think Beyonce would shock every1.

  60. Taylor swifts number 1 fan February 7, 2011

    All she needs to do is a duet with someone who’s popular right now and she’ll be back in the game.

  61. Nichole February 7, 2011

    Whitney’s voice was in a league of its own, and I don’t believe any of the vocalist today comes close to Whit in her prime.

    J.Hud is more of a Patti Labelle type. Too loud.

    Beyonce…no.

    Fantasia…no.

    Christina….they referred to her as the best singer since Mariah, which I once agreed with.

  62. the kiddz February 7, 2011

    ^^Beyonce is similar in terms of vibrato and operatic usage of their head voice. But, like you said: Whitney in her prime was untouchable, simply The Voice.

  63. D.Strock February 7, 2011

    I know I was like “Oh cool, maybe this will be a nice chance for her to get some well needed recognition”. Jokes. I really hope stuff works out for her

  64. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @ the kidds that is the STUPIDEST thing I have ever heard.!!! A singer’s voice can’t be messed up because of a miscarriage… I can only imagine the life you lead with a mind like that.

  65. ~BeySoBreezy~ February 7, 2011

    Life isnt about making it through the storm, but dancing in the rain. Keep pushing Christina….

    @RoyalKev I agree. It wasnt as bad as the media is making it out to be. But of course, they rather focus on the negative instead of letting out positive energy…

  66. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @ Prince you are wrong
    Beyonce attempted to sing Whitney’s “A Song for You” and it sounded a hot mess!! This song can only be attempted by a true virtuoso singer. Christina sung it at the Grammy rehearsals and on Ellen, and was the closest I’ve seen to Whitney’s Beyonce barely had any strength to her voice on this song. One must possess control over pitch and notes to be able to sing it well.

    Google “A song for you” with Whitney live, Christina/ Hancock/ ELlen, and then Beyonce and tell me who comes close to Whitney. THis is my favorite Whitney song of all time!

  67. JohnVidal February 7, 2011

    Those people insinuating Beyonce could sing a Whitney song at the level Whitney did in her prime are f****** delusional.
    Since the vocal trinity, it hasn´t appeared a voice that has it all still. The last great vocal divas that have/had it all were Whitney, Mariah and also Celine. Xtina ruins it with her tone and the screaming, Beyonce is simply… not average but unoriginal or not special. J. Hudson please…loud loud. Plus she can´t even compete cos she is really not a succesful global superstar. Since those 3 ladies slayed at their primes nobody has come close. They had THE VOICE and the megastar appeal. If u notice all the rest of the megastars don´t have the voice (Madonna, Beyonce, Britney, etc) and those past legends that had the voice (Aretha, etc) never were global megastars with spectacular sales. I mean it´s really difficult to become a megastar having that amazing voice, it´s more usual the performer type. So those 3 ladies really did it and nobody can bring them down, nobody.
    I just can´t when Bey stans or even worse Rihanna or those nowadays fake b****** criticize them. Poor retarded people!!!

  68. KaVion February 7, 2011

    I love you Christina!!!!!

  69. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    I just wanted to add that the key to Whitney was that she knew how to control the dynamics of her voice. She could put emotion into a song by belting out a note and then contrast it by barely whispering-but you clearly heard the note. Most singers nowadays think that you have to sing loudly to convey emotion but you can also whisper softly and still get the point across.

    Whitney gives you Ella Fitzgerald teas with her voice sometimes.

  70. Prince&Queen February 7, 2011

    @Kelzrowland i din’t know that was Whitney original song but Beyonce came close imo then Christina. Beyonces version wasnt a hotmess though u need 2 check out that video again. Someone put clips of Beyonce and Whitney’s version in the same video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xGEmv6LVxM

  71. ChEeRfUl CyNiC XD February 7, 2011

    I recently purchased Bionic. Its f****** good she shouldn’t have released not myself tonight 1st though

  72. the kiddz February 7, 2011

    @KELZROWLAND

    Why don’t you pick up a book about vocal pedagogy and maybe what I said will make sense to you. Until then, it’s obvious you have no idea what you are talking about. Have you ever noticed how a pregnant woman sounds before and during her pregnancy?Call it stupid if you like, but that’s how the human body works.

  73. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @kidds
    Um every great singer has had children and could still sing afterwards.. According to what you are saying having kids can also make you lose your voice….I’m not following you ?!?

    And I’m not going to entertain such foolishness!!

  74. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @ Prince I have to disagree. I thought Whitney shredded that song, and Christina came close. Beyonce didn’t even show the highs and lows of her voice (if she was able). Maybe you’re just a Bey stan.

  75. TheMan4u February 7, 2011

    I dont think beyonce could pull off a Whitney song, i think the closest to Whitney is J-Hud now that she has learned to control her voice a little bit better, Beyonce doesnt have the power.

  76. kelzrowland February 7, 2011

    @ the man I agree, Beyonce’s voice is very melodic but can’t touch Whitney at her prime. Not to say I don’t enjoy’s Bey’s music, I do.

  77. Chris February 7, 2011

    Just cause a movie made a decent amount of money doesn’t mean it was good.. People watched that movie for Cher not Christina.. and the Golden Globes only nominated it because it was a musical and they always nominate a movie that is a musical even if it sucks cuz the category is best comedy or musical

  78. the kiddz February 7, 2011

    @KELZROWLAND

    Now you’re just reaching. Let’s go back to my initial comment: “her voice is gone due to her excessive touring, drugs, miscarriages, etc.” These COMBINED things contributed to her vocal decline, I never said miscarriages ALONE. If you can’t comprehend that simple sentence, then I will sorry for you.

    And Beyonce has more vocal power than she lets on, but let me stop here before you get confused even more.

    @Kelzrowland i cant believe u you dont hear the strength in Bey’s version. She probably didn’t show the highs and lows to you in that song but u know and thousands of other people know she’s very capable.@Theman4u u said Beyonce don’t have Power in her voice…lol wow please dont make me start posting Beyonce videos that shows of her Powerful voice.

  83. HALF AMAZIN February 7, 2011

    Actually @ F*ck That Gay Juice…

    get your google fingers ready because European English often replace the letter “z” for “s”. So sit down and be silent

  84. Ariana February 7, 2011

    @F*CK THAT GAY JUICE
    LOL, you’re forgetting Sam’s British and that’s how Britons spell “apologise” . It’s not misspelled, actually it’s perfectly fine.
    Another example: realize=realise

  85. Chris February 7, 2011

    Please don’t.. Beyonce is annoying as f*** just like Christina.. Those voices are like nails on a chalkboard. Just cuz you can be loud and scream doesn’t mean you should.

  86. Chris February 7, 2011

    Thank you ARIANA.. i was going to say the same thing!

  87. JohnVidal February 7, 2011

    @Chris
    They are annoying if u compare them to the greatest I mentioned!

    I love the Bey and Whitney clips for “A song for you”. Whitney is total perfection. She mastered moving up and down the scale, extending her notes, perfect clarity and controling her range and that technique goes unmatched as far as I’m concerned, but Beyonce is also an excellent singer. Her power is impressive, but she uses great technique as well. Whitney did sing that song better out of the two, but both were great in different ways. Christina, has a lot of power too! Her’s rival Whitney and Beyonce’s, but she doesn’t have the control. That would be the only thing that really takes her down a notch. Her power is stronger than Mariah’s, but in her prime Mariah does surpass her talent because she had way more technique. JHud is sort of interesting to me, her power seems unbeatable because it’s sheer power when she sings wether it’s high or low. Her lower tones are warmer than her higher tones (which almost turns into a screeching like sound). Her diction could be better. So although she has so much going on for her, I’d place her last. Someone said she’s loud like Patti and I think she could let a song build better. She’s getting there! Celine Dion reminds me of Whitney, she can do pratically do everything whitney can , but Whitney sings with much more clarity. Celine always has a certain twang in her singing, but it’s really just nit picking if you take any credit from her. With Xtina, this performance could have been better… still it wasn’t absolutely terrible. I can see if she had more difficulty singing certain notes and was straining more. I just think her fumbling with the words made the struggle more obvious.

    @Prince&Queen, no dont get me wrong, i do think Bey has power. i wish she uses it more. Her performance of Listen on Oprah was what made me think she could possibly be the next Whitney, but she just doesnt show it more.

    @RoyalKev, i dont think Bey’s power rivals Whitney, not even close, i think X-tina is closer when she can control it. but thats where Whitney tops all of them. her transitioning is unmatached how she can go from a powerful belt in chest to head voice effortlessly like she did in A Song for you.

  90. Hudson Morrigan February 7, 2011

    Not only did she botch the lyrics but she was horrible off pitch and strained like hell
    She should stop singing already and get herself a real job she can do well, perhaps flipping burgers at McDonalds?
    Anyways…as long as there are streets to walk she’ll always find employment…

  91. theman February 7, 2011

    Out of Aguilera,Hudson and Beyonce’ Aguilera is the most versatile, and does more with her voice. Beyonce’ ain’t even close. Her voice isn’t as dynamic as the others. Christina tore that Whitney song up. Jennifer has great power, but thats her only bread and butter. Beyonce’ couldn’t touch a Whitney song.

    Christina did a great job, minus the end of the song, and the flubbing of the lyrics.

  92. True Blue February 8, 2011

    @RoyalKev:

    I completely agree, the reaction to this is way over-the-top. Yes, she f***** up and she apologized for it, the end. People act like she killed someone. The performance wasn’t great, but I’ve read comments comparing this performance to Roseanne Barr singing the NA, which is a comparison without an ounce of merit, because Roseanne can’t sing at all and her performance of the NA was completely unbearable. Christina only sounded bad towards the end. People are really exaggerating. But then again, there tends to an extreme backlash whenever a mishap occurs at the NFL (i. e. Janet Jackson), so I probably shouldn’t be surprised at this. But it does feel like people just love beat up on Christina as of late.

    @ Lola:

    So you don’t mind if I bash you and tell you to go engage in self copulation for being a c***, right?

    @ Beystanbish:

    Please do it, and bitchslap Lola for me as well.

    @ The Kiddz:

    Is it too late to repair the damage done to her voice?

  93. True Blue February 8, 2011

    @ Hudson Morrigan:

    She could buy and sell your ass a 100 times over, so perhaps you should worry more about keeping yourself employed, largely assuming that you have a job.

  94. Royalkev February 8, 2011

    @ The man, I was actually saying that Xtina’s power rivals Whitney and Beyonce’s, but she’s not consistent with her control. She hasn’t fully got a handle of her voice, it’s just not too out of hand because she sings with a lot of maturity. She just need the skill. Your right Whitney is great at transitioning, but I can say the same for Beyonce. These 2 do it superbIy. Mariah and Celine does as well! I agree that Xtina (and Bey) are both pretty versatile. It a tough call out of the 2 to pick which 1 is more so.

    @True Blue – I’ll be completely honest, I think the Xtina backlash started with her become compaired to Gaga. The way the industry works these days, you don’t get any favoritsm when your the veteran (I know, it’s backwards). Everyone is fascinated with the new person that hits the scene, so they totally throw out the “old” artist and get caught up with the newcomer. So, I knew the battle between these 2 was the beginning of the end for Xtina’s era! Now that Gaga isn’t so new, she has a chance to make a comeback and have somewhat of an even fight. It’s just that since she’s in a messy divorce and the album flopped they sort of label her as the “new Britney” – that’s spiraling out of control and 2 minutes away from a breakdown. Nothing she does for a while will be right (she’s in the same boat as Ciara and Lindsay Lohan). After the artist take a break, we build them back up. Just like Mariah Whitney and Britney, Xtina will come back and be better than ever, blah, blah,blah…. Unless you cost some people some serious money(Janet and the FCC, whole nother story)! The performance wasn’t that bad, but since it’s happening now – it’s the worst thing ever!

    Y’all can kiss her ass!

    Xtina still a legend, and will ALWAYS be remembered for her UNIQUE, POWERFUL, CHARISMATIC VOICE. Your faces could never

    You know what? Y’all are bitter, jealous and shallow. GO XTINA, you’re one of the best voices who graced this earth.

    @KELZROWLAND

    I already corrected my mistake. And the name is “Kiddz” with a Z, b****.

  99. Diane February 8, 2011

    Whitney’s version is the best because she sung the song in its original arrangement and killed it! Most artists have to rearrange the song to fit their vocal styling because the anthem’s arrangement is too difficult.

    Whitney’s version is patriotic, beautiful, clear-sounding, strong and effortless.

  100. Chris February 8, 2011

    I agree.. nobody has sung the National Anthem better than Whitney Did… well besides Roseanne Barr hah

  101. J February 8, 2011

    Sorry, but to the stans who say “Burlesque” wasn’t a flop, umm let’s keep it real. The budget for the film was @ $50 million and they were only able to rack in $80million? That’s a flop to me, so they was able to pay off the budget, and they get like what 40%? Lol. Anyway, I’m not going to throw shade. Do I think she did bad at the National Anthem? Mehh she was kind of screaming, but she did OK. People pay to much interest to this girl though the less time you give her the more she will learn to get it together. Girl-bye take a vacation!

  102. God February 8, 2011

    She has created a pattern of thought for herself that is not working. Instead of allowing the creative genius to flow through her by staying connected with her confidence and inner peace and harmony, she focus’ on the last failure. Instead of looking to the past, she needs to steer her head to the future. The resiliency of this woman is astounding. This gift was given to her and she has overcome so many adversities. The woman who will rise from this will wash over the world in brilliant ways. She had such a huge positive influx for such a long period of time that she had to go through such turmoil in order to refocus and reestablish. We are seeing a prelude to something close to Mariah’s “Emancipation of MiMi” moment.

    And plus, the b**** is getting fat, she needs to find inner peace and harmony soon! XD
