Readers of That Grape Juice know how passionate we are about music – whether that be past or present.
However, unlike our other segments – Retro Rewind, TGJ Replay, and From The Vault – The Pop Stop is the most in-depth look at Pop songs that may have flown under the radar over the last week that you should know, rather they be from music’s biggest stars or those on the rise.
This week, we want to highlight cuts from Conan Gray, Joel Corry, NCT 127, and Emily Scott Robinson.
Join us inside…
Conan Gray – Telepath
Announced on the heels of a massive world tour in 2022, Conan Gray is back with another absolute pop triumph. One of Taylor Swift’s prodigies, Gray, like Swift before him, can predict the future and sees the end of a relationship coming; however, he knows that this former flame will come back to him. Set to the tune of shimmering 80’s synths, a bouncy bass line, and heart pounding beat, ‘Telepath’ is another masterful stroke of genius from one of music’s future superstars.

Joel Corry – I Wish
A string of top 10 hits in the UK has proven that Joel Corry is a certified hitmaker and his latest song is no different. Teaming up with Mabel, the pair does not capture magic in a bottle, rather they create it. This house tune is complete with bumping bass lines, anthemic synths, and snaps. When paired with the regretful lyrics, the two are able to create one of the best house songs of the year.

NCT 127 – Favorite (Vampire)
K-pop group NCT 127 have done it again. The global megastars have created a standout tune with their song ‘Favorite Vampire).’ Silky vocals guide the way across palpitating beats, a skittering trap groove, and whistling synths. However, above the creative production and heavenly vocals lays the song’s true strength: the nuance that bubbles below the surface in the song’s lyrics. The lyrics are forlorn and tell the tale of love lost. Heartbreaking as it is catchy, NCT 127 has created a tune that stand’s among their best.

Emily Scott Robinson – Let ‘Em Burn
Having just released a contender for album of the year with ‘American Siren,’ singer-songwriter Emily Scott Robinson has shared the track ‘Let ‘Em Burn’ from the project. It is an absolutely devastating tune about watching your dreams go up in flames and the hopelessness that goes with it. Built around a simple piano and nothing else, the instrumentation allows for Robinson’s voice to shine through as she weaves her tale. Easily one of the best songs of the year, Robinson once again proves why she is truly one of America’s greatest songwriters.
