For as colossal, illustrious, and highly declared as Bassett’s career has been, two significant honors eluded her – an Academy Award (Oscar) and an Emmy.
Kicking off 2024 in winning fashion, January saw the superstar bestowed with an Honorary Oscar at the 14th Annual Governors Awards. Saluted for her towering and exceptional contributions to the film industry, Bassett used her captivating acceptance speech to pay homage to the Black actresses who paved the way for her.
The firsts continued.
Because, after nine nominations across the length and breadth of her career, Bassett won her first Emmy at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September. She bagged the Outstanding Narrator for her work on the National Geographic docuseries ‘Queens,’ which spotlights the female animals in the wild.
Overdue, but oh-so-deserved!

Based on her level of talent, I’m still waiting for her to WIN an academy award in a competitive category, not just receive an honorary one. Cecily Tyson similarly had to settle for an honorary AA despite her equally as talented career. It’s ridicously long overdue for another black female actress to win in the lead actress category. The fact that Halle is the only one to have ever done so despite all of the talented black lead actresses in worthy roles is sad.
