The streaming titan and the powerhouse music label have unveiled new licensing agreements that will allow fans to create AI-generated covers and remixes using songs from participating artists and songwriters.

Arriving as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, the feature will make the finished version of these types of tracks playable across the platform for all users.

According to Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström, the initiative is built around “consent, credit and compensation” with participating artists set to earn additional revenue from fan-made creations.

Importantly, the program will be opt-in only (meaning artist will choose whether their music can be used).

“The most valuable innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together. That principle is at the heart of this pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative, which is designed to support human artistry, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters,” UMG boss Sir Lucian Grainge said in a statement.

The announcement also signals a major shift in how the industry may approach AI music going forward not as a threat but as a monetized extension of fandom.
