Melanie Fiona Sheds Light On Exploitation In The Music Industry

Published: Thursday 3rd May 2012 by David

During a recent interview with ‘RagoLdn‘, Grammy winning songstress Melanie Fiona opened up like never before- speaking candidly on some of the industry’s ‘rug swept’ issues.

Check out her interesting take on sexuality and exploitation below…

When quizzed on the pressures of being sexy, she confessed:

All the time. There’s pressure all the time. Every female artist has that pressure. It’s if you allow yourself to succumb that pressure, so I see it as a challenge not to succumb to that pressure. So it’s more of a challenge to base my success on the quality of music and not the quality of my…assets.

Then, on the exploitation of artists by the industry:

If you work with people that treat you like a product, you will be exploited like a product.

If you work with people who treat you like a person, as someone who has a living heart, with emotions and family and requires the natural things everybody needs in life- then you have people working in your best interests, and I’m fortunate enough to have that.

What are your thoughts on exploitation in the industry?

THERE ARE SO MANY ASPECTS AND LEVELS OF EXPLOITATION IN EVERY DAY LIFE AND IN EVERY PROFESSION…

    NOT JUST THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!!!

LOL…….. @winning she’s a respected musical artist, so she knows what she’s talking about.

I like this chick, she is more concerned with having a stable career based on music rather than gimmicks… Refreshing!

    Love her

  5. Twhist May 3, 2012

Good for her,for not taking off her clothes to sell records….that’s why you don’t know who she is @ Winning and Jake. You’ll feel differently as you two hopefully mature

  6. lol May 3, 2012

    i respect her

Melanie has always seemed to be oddly perched atop a high horse. If the MF life had been more successful, somehow I think the the delivery of this comment would have been different or it wouldn’t have been made at all.

well i guess if you’re light skinned and signed by Jay-z’s all light skinned roc nation….you should not be complaining cuz there are lots of unfaireness

I think she comes off as aloof and cocky. That’s why people can’t get into her. She always seem to be taking subtle digs at other artists. She need to realize that being able to sing is just one aspect of being marketable. The other is being able to connect with the masses. Which is something she haven’t been able to do yet. Although I like her singing voice and some of her songs. She’s not that interesting.

The thing is she is right in what she is saying. I suppose all the people complaining about a declaration like this one are Rihanna fans or something. You liking her or not (I personally don´t care about her) has nothing to do with the subject she is talking about

Sorry MF but entertainment is “GO HARD OR STAY HOME”. You are a product when your an artist and you have to use every asset you have to take advantage of that. Leona Lewis is a better singer than MF and it hasn’t gotten her much further. Your only a w**** when you don’t know how to differentiate the difference between what’s business and what’s personal. You knew what you were getting into when you got in and the game aint gonna change because although your good your by no means a game changer. I like MF personally but realtalk is she’s only a C artist right now, C+ on her best day.

PREACH. if you are gonna do generic music, people will call you generic. i think this is about nicki minaj

  13. Girrrl May 3, 2012

I bought her album and can’t understand why it’s flopping. However I think she is throwing shots at Rihanna since.they have the same management but Rih is.getting more attention. Mel just needs to get a big gig and perform Wrong Side of a Love Song. That should make people pay attention.

I dont feel as though she’s taking digs at anybody, she’s just saying what most already know about record labels.

otherwise, I dont know much about her but I plan to take more of a listen to her records.

  15. MH May 3, 2012

I adore Melanie Fiona and I love her music. She’s not coming for anybody but she’s just saying that she allows her music to speak for itself and she has the right to say that because she actually makes great music. Some people HAVE to take off their clothes because if they didn’t, their talent and music wouldn’t carry them along.

  16. likeCAESAR May 3, 2012

If she wasn’t cute with long hair she wouldn’t have a record deal. Her songs are not that good and her voice is ok but nothing special about. I know a chick around the corner sing just like her. She needs to sit down and shut up. Every artist is a product to the label. Its about making money…a BUSINESS. Obviously no one wants to see Adele strip down…but she is still a product (that is still flying off the shelves.). Maybe if she focused more on making a hit instead of “real music” and “real artists” she’d be more successful. Until then…have a damn seat on the F section, cause she’s not even D

you don’t want to be exploited work for yourself. anytime someone else signs your cheque you’re been exploited so stfu and do your job or quit. the business don’t put gun to know one head to sign the contract.. not everyone use sexuality. some people are just comfortable with their sexuality. people come from different cultures. she of all person should know that. her mother is from Guyana and her father is Jamaican. Had she grew up in the Caribbean she would not be saying that. Caribbean people are very sexual in their music.

  18. xedos May 3, 2012

maybe she should start looking at her self as a product then learn how to market a product. i think her career would do better. she has good songs, but once she get off stage no one remembers her or who she is. she not interesting people dont have anything to latch on to.

  19. Natasha May 3, 2012

For all of you idiots that keep bringing Rihanna up, ya’ll might as well bring all your faves up, because Lord knows they ain’t innocent or saints!!! Whether show they show very little or alot, s** is s**, just like sin is sin, and 95 to 99.99 % of that industry sells s**. I won’t bring up names, but in this age the only artist I’ll give a pass is Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Brandy, Monica, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Melanie Fiona, Keisha Cole… a few more, and no its not who ya’ll might think.
