For Nelly Furtado, the cost her six year long chart hiatus hit home upon the release of her new LP ‘The Spirit Indestructible’.
Leaving spectators dazed and confused with first week sales failing to hit 7,000 units sold figure, recent weeks have seen Furtado shy away from speaking on the project…until now.
Find out what she had to say on the release below…
Speaking to ‘The Huffington Post‘, she shared:
“I’ve had kind of everything happen to me commercially and at different levels. I’ve had different scenes and I’ve dabbled in a lot of markets so I see the music world as very global and I’m always looking for new avenues and opportunities, so one chart or anything doesn’t necessarily [mean anything.]”
Let’s hope Interscope feel the same way.
Though Furtado is and will always remain a breath of fresh air as far as sound goes, her numbers this time around are too low to warrant an explanation like the one above.
For, while sales around 80 to 100k might be forgiven or overlooked by a label, pulling in 6,000 or so copies may leave some wondering if the album was worth releasing at all- considering the fact it was purchased by next to no one.
The way we see it, the LP’s numbers came as a result of A. her lengthy absence from the scene and B. material that didn’t quick stick in the way she needed it to.
Here’s hoping her next LP delivers a more cohesive sound, and strays away from cuts like ‘Hoops’ and serves more akin to ‘Say It Right’, ‘Manos El Aire’ and the ever moving ‘Powerless‘.

She doesn´t deserve it. So many ubertalented artists doing 100,000 oe even less and that girl more than a million doesn´t make sense. All my respect to her cos she´s not to blame and she is at least a songwriter. But her music is totally bland, she can´t sing, etc, etc. It´s like a Back Street Boys or Britney´s phenomenon. Huge sales thanks to teens and parents buying it for their kids cos “she is a good girl”… but who the hell takes her really seriously as a real great artist? Nobody. Taylor swift has had a slow and gradual growth…She has gone from country (big audience) to mainstream and kept her original fanbase aswell. Her newest album is like comparing Nelly F to her peak.
Nellys problem was not the fact she had been away for a while…look at maneater….that came out of nowhere, and was a huge hit.

Basically her own fault for waiting so long to follow up. If her last album came out in ’06, then she should have had a followup to it out no later than ’09. She let the whole music scene change on her and most of her casual fans moved on. Artists kill me thinking they can take long breaks and come back to the same adoring public. There shouldn’t be longer than a 2 year gap from the last single from your last album to the first single from your next.
Brandy is an R&B artist with nowhere near the exposure of Nelly, Taylor or any of these pop chicks. So in all honesty, her first week sells are actually good. R&B acts are not going multi platinum anymore. She sold 70,000 units with little to no record label support and a song that came out 4 months ago. Nelly had similar circumstances and she only sold 7,000. The major difference is brandy promoted her project all over 2 weeks ago. Nelly let her album flop. Nelly didn’t even try.
whats sad is the cd is actually really good….
she released her album to quick with no promo look how long it took for big hoops video to come out and i don’t think it was even played on MTV. Another problem is it seems like you can’t get new songs (that aren’t dance or an indie sound) to play on pop radio like they used to and to this generation it’s only worth buying if they have a song that is charted high.
