In an expected yet still stunning development, the sitting president was acquitted by the Senate on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Trump is only the third president in United States history to face an impeachment trial.
However, due largely to the Republicans having a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, the outcome had been a foregone conclusion before the hearings even commenced.
