If Will Smith had hoped to reprise the lead role in future incarnations of ‘Independence Day’ this week would have seen his dreams blown to smithereens.

Why?

Well, despite seeing his latest movie ‘Focus’ rock the box office , the ‘Fresh Prince’ will not appear in the movie’s forthcoming sequel.

Good and bad news below…

Jessie Usher has been called on by Twentieth Century Fox to take centre stage in ‘Independence Day 2’, enlisted to portray the son of Smith’s character twenty years after he was first introduced to movie lovers.

The Hollywood Reporter spills:

Independence Day 2 is set for release on June 24, 2016 — almost exactly 20 years from when the first film hit theaters on July 3, 1996. Dean Devlin, Emmerich and Harald Kloser are producing.

Independence Day 2 is a big get for Usher, who will play a central character in the new film as the son of Smith’s character. Smith’s role in the first blockbuster helped establish him as a star, kicking his career up to the next level.

Usher stars in the Lebron James-produced Starz series Survivor’s Remorse as Cam Calloway, a basketball player who moves with his family to Atlanta after he signs a pro contract. The first season premiered Oct. 4, 2014, and Starz quickly renewed the show for a second season, which will air later this year.

However, fans of the ‘Men in Black‘ actor shouldn’t be too upset.

For, industry murmurs suggest the star may be joining the project on a production front!

Keep it locked on TGJ for more news on the forthcoming release.

I hope it lives up to expectations cause it’s rare the sequels are usually as good as the first minus a few….anyways I can’t!

Ok.. this is just p*** poor “journalism”. Should really check your facts. 1) Besides the casting news, the making of the ID4 sequels (yes there are parts 2 and 3 planned) is about 6 months to 1 year old. What’s ALSO old news is the fact that Will Smith DECLINED to reprise his role at Capt Hiller.

Somebody has to be fact checking these things before posting such misleading nonsense.

Yep. These people are truly ignorant.

Will Smith wants to be the star. It wasn´t going to be the case, so he declined. So it´s not that he was hoping they offered him the role. However, it´s true that they weren´t keen on letting him being the only star. I´m surprised he has accepted S****** Squad, when he´s going to share the spotlight with many other actors (better than him btw).
