Talented actor Nate Parker has the film industry abuzz with his latest movie ‘The Birth of A Nation.’
Already a winner of multiple awards the Sundance Film Festival, the flick (which was also directed by Parker) has received a whopping $17.5 million pick-up from Fox Searchlight who will distribute it in theaters this October 7th.
Set against the antebellum South, ‘Nation’ tells the tale of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates and uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
A compelling trailer for the film, which also stars ‘How To Get Away With Murder’s’ Aja Naomi King, has been unleashed.

Looks like a must-see!
Yes! I was waiting for you guys to blog about this! I know Aja will do a great job!
The movie looks really good and I’m so happy for Aja she will get a lot of attention with this
Nate’s dat dide
While this looks good, it also breaks my heart. I would love to see African Americans outside of the typical “we shall overcome” movies. I would love to see them channel this kind of passion and great acting into other movie ventures.
It isn’t a “we shall overcome” type of movie. You obviously have no idea who Nat Turner was.
I’m well aware of who he is and what he has done. I pride myself on being well educated on the various hues of history. And by “we shall overcome” I meant slavery type stories. I understand that the black culture has had rough but how long can you talk about the past before realizing that you can actually build a brighter future?
This film isn’t about “we shall overcome”, it’s about OVERCOMING. It’s about standing up for what’s right, and never backing down no matter what the consequences are. Nat Turner is a LEGEND our generation needs to be more educated about pioneers like him
Pioneers? He killed women and children that had nothing to do with slavery. Not to mention, his rebellion made things far worse for Black slaves AND free Blacks.
Nat Turner is definitely a historical figure who should be studied, but he was by no means a hero or someone who should be looked up to. He was simply a human being who broke after being a victim to slavery for so long and ended up causing a lot of suffering to others.
You’re blithely unaware of the lyrics of “We Shall Overcome” then.
Innocent? Innocent? Innocent? What about all of the hundreds and thousands of innocent BLACK people who were kidnapped , r****, tortured, and murdered? All of those white people were “involved” in one way or another. Even if that wasn’t the case they never did anything to stop it. All Nat Turner wanted was FREEDOM and they couldnt even give him that.
So f*** them, and f*** you! I’D RATHER DIE ON MY FEET THAN TO LIVE ON MY KNEES
POWER TO THE PEOPLE ✊
We never learned about people like Nat Turner in school. This story needs to be told. I’m so excited to see this film.
The title is a big F you to white america
Birth of A Nation >>>>>>>>
As long as the the full story is told. If this movie omits Nat Turner’s brutality towards innocents then not only will it be historically inaccurate, it will only serve to fan the waves of the racial tensions going on in the US right now.
White people caused the racial tension in the first place. Nobody feels sorry for you…..
You allowed this to happen. You reap what you sew!
“White people?” No, trigger happy cops caused the racial tensions. Being equally racist as those you accuse of being racist isn’t going to solve anything.
The general majority of those “trigger happy” cops are white. So my argument remains the same.
Besides why aren’t you this offended when Donald trump constantly makes racist/insensitive comments about every minority on this earth? Thats right you don’t care! You don’t care if white people do/say problematic things like they ALWAYS HAVE, because it all benefits you, but as soon as a person of color stands up for themselves it makes you uncomfortable. Bobby’s and Becky’s you’re in for a rude awakening! It’s not the 1600’s anymore.
After this year’s Oscars, I can already tell this movie is going to be pushed for Best Picture and Best Actor and any other Oscar they can try to pin on it.
You sure about that?
