Gucci Responds To Dapper Dan Design Drama

Published: Friday 2nd Jun 2017 by David

Digital missiles aimed at the fashion house Gucci have forced them to thank the African-American designer Dapper Dan for inspiring one of their latest “creations”.

Slammed after introducing the image on the left as part of their ‘Gucci Cruise’ collection, the company were accused of stealing the artists work to do so when members of the digital community pointed out that it was identical to his work (which appears on the right).

What they have to say about their supposed theft?

Inside the #GucciCruise18 collection by #AlessandroMichele, a look that celebrates an iconic style of hip-hop fashion culture from the 80s—a plush jacket featuring puffy sleeves monogrammed in GG motif. Legendary tailor Dapper Dan @dapperdanharlem influenced the trend by making such custom pieces for his rapper and athlete clients out of logos from famous fashion houses, including #Gucci. In a homage to Dapper Dan, this jacket worn with jeans and a lurex headpiece is flanked with a striped knit with cross-stitch embroidery, cotton shorts and a georgette gown with trompe l’oeil details.

Dan made tons of money from selling counterfeit designer clothing. He’s been paid.

I don’t think this was about money at all. It is about recognition for creativity. Dan’s creative concept was used without acknowledgement. Now he received acknowledgement after social media blasted Gucci. The concept of puffy shoulder pads and puffy sleeves coupled with a fur jacket was not Dan’s exclusively in the 80s. He just put a designer look to an 80s trend coupled with a stylistic swag. Watch a couple episodes of Dynasty and you will see the 80s swag in full display.
