Janelle Monae Joins Cast Of Harriet Tubman Movie

Janelle Monae‘s movie resumé just added an exciting new chapter.

For, the multi-dimensional maven has just been announced as the latest addition to the cast of ‘Harriet’ – the biopic of freedom fighter Harriet Tubman.

The film, which stars Cynthia Erivo in the lead role, chronicles Tubman’s escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad. All in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.

There’s no word yet on which role Monae (who starred is Oscar winning movie ‘Moonlight’) will take on. What is for sure is that she beefs up an already stellar cast.

For, also on-board are  Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr, Jennifer Nettles, and Joe Alwyn. Vanessa Bell Calloway, Clarke Peters, Zackary Momoh, Deborah Ayorinde, and Vondie Curtis-Hall also star. Kasi Lemmons (‘Eve’s Bayou’) takes the helm as director.

Filming commences later this month.

Before ‘Harriet’ premieres, Monae (who dropped new album ‘Dirty Computer’ in April) can be seen in ‘Welcome To Marwen’ co-starring Steve Carrell and Leslie Mann.

Kudos to Janelle for diversifying her output. As the likes of ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘Moonlight’ proved, she’s a skilled actress, hence we’re excited to see her shine in what is shaping up to be a must-see movie.
