Whether scribbled in history books for some good, great, or awesomely bad reasons, 2018 brought with it some of modern Pop culture’s most memorable moments.
Now, as the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on 31 moments that rocked – and to some degree shaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.
Next, we reflect on Mo’Nique‘s epic battle against Netflix:
Actress/comedienne Mo’Nique spent most of the last two to three years rocking headlines for a very public battle against director Lee Daniels, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey for alleging the trio were instrumental in her “industry black balling.” As her media run saw her take to top tier daytime and primetime television slots, print, and radio to plead her case, the general public – as evidenced by explosive social media commentary – seemed split on the topic.
By the top of 2018, the comedienne dropped another bombshell when she called for the boycott of streaming giant Netflix due to what she branded as prejudicial practices (as seen in the video above).
The call-to-action led to unrelenting ridicule on social media, but also incited a conversation about equality that certainly saw many come to the comedienne’s aid. And, despite the press run in support of her new cause earning its fair share of detractors, the incident – seemingly unresolved even at the year’s end – reminded us all of how relevant the 51-year-old is to modern Pop culture.
Whether described as champion or chump, she still knows how to get people talking.
