Published: Saturday 10th Aug 2019 by David

Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature forged to honour some of the brightest moments in TV and Film.

Today, we take a pleasant journey to the past to celebrate the release of Mariah Carey‘s ‘Butterfly’ album and supporting era and the interviews she gave to promote the set.

Powered by poignant storytelling and charged by feelings of love, loneliness, loss, growth and change, the album was launched on September 16th 1997 and saw her step away from her sounds of yesteryear and glide further towards R&B with help from Missy Elliott, Diddy, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Cory Rooney and Walter Afanasieff.

It wasn’t raining yet
But it was definitely
A little misty on
That warm November night

It has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Find out how below…

Last night I dreamed that I
Whispered the words I love you
And touched you so very
Subtly as we were kissing goodbye
Pretty baby, how I’m missing you

I like Honey, My All, Butterfly / Butterfly Reprise, and Breakdown.

      Interesting Facts;

1.Stevie J from Love and Hip Hop produced some songs for this album.

      2. This was the last album Mariah collaborated with Walter Alfansaif

TROLLmine “Lead The Way” on the Glitter album was produced and co-written with Walter A. So technically it was Glitter although the track was recorded for the Rainbow era

      • Mariahslamb August 10, 2019

        Co-Produced*
Never ever forget it’s mariah that comes up with the melodies, the lyrics, the structure of the song, literally everything else.

But she loves to collaborate with other artists.
She is also a songwriter and a producer. The most successful female singer songwriter producer of all time and top 3 in general.

@Mariahslamb there’s an obvious reason why Mariah’s best work was when she wrote with Walter and after leaving Walter her strongest ballad has been “lead the way” (written and produced with Walter). I’m not diminishing her part but don’t diminish Walters. He is as equal of a musician, writer and contributor to Mariah’s music as she is… he just plays multiple instruments as opposed to Mariah’s vocal instrument. Guaranteed with no Walter there’s not a lot of Mariah’s best musical moments and that’s a 100% fact.

FAGmine My comment was 100 percent fact! Glitter was a soundtrack not an album. Also the same magic between Walter and Mariah is evident in Mariah & JD’s many hit songs like We Belong Together song.

Dang TROLLmine (man) I’m right and you are jealous of that. Wow

      • R@$put!@ L@tt!m0re August 10, 2019

FAGmine Hasmine is correct. Your opinion is meaningless. Hers is what is important. You are just a F A G. Nobody cares what u think

This album still gets regular spins from me. ‘The Roof,’ ‘Breakdown,‘ ‘Babydoll,’ and ‘Close My Eyes’ are my faves.

Omg yessss this album is just a masterpiece from her ??

  4. Sjl August 10, 2019

This is one of my all-time favorite and most listened to albums. When she gets the opportunity to have creative control she creates timeless music that stands the rest of time. “Outside” helped me with accepting myself as a gay man. The entire record is amazing, but the best cuts are those songs that weren’t commercially released, “The Roof,” “Breakdown,” “Fourth of July.” Imagine what this album could have done if Sony had been fully behind it.

      Test of time

  5. Fancy BISH August 10, 2019

Ariana copied and pasted errrythang from the Butterfly era *Eats Cinnamon Toast Crunch* *SMACKS* ?

  6. Oh plz August 10, 2019

According to Carey, this is her “magnum opus” (i.e. the greatest, most important body of work of her career). I couldn’t agree more with this statement. “Butterfly” is an absolute masterpiece…cohesive, emotive, lyrically beautiful, technically flawless, resonant, and I can go on and on with the adjectives. LOVE LOVE LOVE this one.

Butterfly Reprise (Fly away) is my all-time fav, ESPECIALLY the extended David Morales mix with extra vocals. I always picture myself, pumping ? down a fabulous runway in a flowing, printed chiffon gown and 4” strappy stilettos!! only real fans know about alllllllll that!

  8. Gee August 10, 2019

This will always be known as Mariah’s artistic moment of excellence. The butterfly album and era truly represents growth personally, professionally, and artistically. This era is definitely a moment in time.
