THR reports that the ‘Insecure’ creator is prepping a re-imagining of New Line’s 90s crime thriller classic, which originally starred Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett, Kimberly Elise, and Vivica A. Fox.
Rae is on-board as co-producer and is believed to be starring too.
Joining her on producing duties is longtime collaborator Montrel McKay, from Issa Rae Productions.
Nina Gloster (‘Star’) and Syreeta Singleton (‘Black Monday’) have been enlisted to pen the script.
Directed by F. Gary Gray, the 1996 original told the tale of a quad of friends who embarked on a series of bank robberies after experiencing various hardships. Initially successful, many of their eventual fates were grim.
What wasn’t, however, was the film’s box office success – which was immense. It grossed $41 million on a production budget of $9 million. And went on to become a bonafide classic within the realms of Black cinema and beyond.
Time will tell if this revisiting of the story delivers comparable success in the contemporary climate.
