If I have to hear HER loud voice, then it’s a no for me.

I’m here for this. Perfect casting. The Queen of Soul was kind of a saucy, prickly personality. I hope Jennifer Hudson captures the essence of the real person and not just her stage persona.

Sounds more like the Jennifer Hudson movie (vocal wise). Since Aretha’s voice is not featured in her own supposed film, I’m not interested. JH sounds good, but she is not Aretha. Aretha voice is too unique, known, and quintessential to who she was in the industry for her film to not feature her voice. The trailer features JH singing, but IMO the acting ability is much more important in portrayals. The fact that they seem to be placing the emphasis on Jennifer’s vocal ability is disappointing.

Aretha herself personally picked JHud to portray her, so your opinion is invalid.

      • Aretha fan December 20, 2019

Aretha also originally wanted Halle Berry to portray her! Aretha’s fans opinion WILL matter if we skip the movie and wait for HBO. Aretha is a vocal icon and it’s very shortsighted for the producers not to use her original recordings for this movie. Just my opinion.

      • Divab December 20, 2019

Sorry but JHud was not her 1st choice, she really wanted Halle Berry and said vocally they would use Aretha voice.

wish i could tell all I know..im one of her harshest critics on this movie….but i will say she pulls off aretha esque vocals better than this trailer shows so far

When this was coming together Aretha said they would use a mix of her singing and Jennifer’s singing, I hope that’s the case otherwise it’s just going to be a movie version of American Idol.

    • Anne December 20, 2019

Okay, didn’t know that. I hope they at least use a nearly even mixture, if not majority Aretha, as well. But the only problem is Aretha unfortunately was not to still here to see that come to fruition, unlike Tina Turner who was blessed to live through the making of her movie wand was able to make sure that it featured her own very unique voice. If this movie does well, generations to come will see it, I think it’s important that they hear Aretha when they do.

If they’re smart they’ll play this for November, December next year. Anytime earlier may hurt the films chances at Awards noms just ask Lupita.

Supposedly comes out October 2010, going against “Halloween Kills”. Might be pushed up though, Halloween has a HUGE, money splurging following.

  9. Danyboo December 20, 2019

Nooooo put Aretha’s voice to it…

  10. #TheTruth December 20, 2019

I think this is a good choice, she’s got the chops to do it.
    I’ll go watch that movie.

Jennifer Hudson is a god AWFUL actress. She also OVER SINGS every song she performs. They only gave her that Oscar prematurely for performing AND IM TELLING YOU. It takes nothing for a black woman to get on screen and portray an “attitude”. Jennifer isn’t worthy of the Oscar or a Grammy. She stays booked for no reason. Her name doesn’t draw a mass audience. RESPECT won’t be a special cinematic project. All I hear is JHudd in this trailer & nothing about Aretha’a pure essence.

Seeing this clip of @IAMJHUD as Aretha @RespectMovie gave me Dreamgirls all over again feat Aretha Franklin. It’s hard not to see Effie white , the singing , entire era, the make up , the costume … Effie White!! I’m still excited to see it though . Hopefully she slays!!! It should be Aretha’s voice tho much like they did for what’s love got to do with it…….

  13. A Star is Born December 20, 2019

    Effie White is that you?

  14. GG December 20, 2019

I hate when they don’t use the artist actual voice when singing!!!!! I want to hear Aretha! Damn

  15. Yolanda December 20, 2019

Clive Davis has no respect for his black female artists (Aretha and Whitney). Aretha’s voice should have been dubbed. Jennifer Hudson cannot control her voice. Her phrasing is awful.

    Looks good!!
