Tyler Perry Ignites Debate After Revealing: “I Write All Of My Work Alone”

Published: Monday 6th Jan 2020 by Sam

Tyler Perry is without doubt one of Hollywood’s most inspirational entities.

A point he re-affirmed in earnest with the recent opening of his mammoth studio in Atlanta.

Recognising the influence and aspiration that surrounds his name, the star took to social media to share a little of his sauce with the masses.

But while some took to his words, others are taking him to task.

See what we mean below…

Moments ago, Perry shared a clip of scripts he’s written for his growing list of shows. Scripts he revealed he wrote entirely by himself. He touted this as a means of stressing how effective work ethic is:

Quickly, though, several commenters expressed concerns about the quality of said scripts and the arguable issue attached to not having a writers room.

Notably, there were also several supporting his sentiment too. Which has us asking, what are…

Your thoughts?

I can definitely believe he does

  2. Clarks0oñ January 6, 2020

    Quantity over quality
That’s why his shows and movies are silly.
Black people still gonna eat it up tho, cause yall dont got no taste.

    Let me guess,
a gay dude is gonna get Hìv ,
A black woman is gonna go thru serious trauma with her boyfriend/husband

Most good writers take 2-5 years developing a single script, fleshing out characters, rewriting monologues, etc.

    • SMH January 6, 2020

How the hell would you know? How many successful TV & film scripts have you written?

      • Cûûmila Cebolla January 6, 2020

He wrote the script of the p*** your mom stars in.

      • Paulo January 6, 2020

I’m sure the delusional essays about Crowmila being a superstar count, right?

  3. AJ January 6, 2020

But why are they mad? If he didn’t write he would still be mad. Why do we have a problem with how someone makes their money?

    • SMH January 6, 2020

Because they aren’t smart enough to do it themselves. The average social media user can’t even spell correctly most of the time.

  4. Danise January 6, 2020

Yes Tyler. We can tell. ?

  5. G-bby January 6, 2020

Y’all stay mad at Tyler Perry while your aunties and grannies are tuning in weekly to his shows, and rushing to the movies to watch his films. He has a market. Get over it. If you aren’t a part of that said market, then so be it. TP literally started from the bottom. I’m proud of everything he’s accomplished whether I’m a fan of all his work or not.

    • IAMME January 8, 2020

      ABSOLUTELY.

  6. eric January 6, 2020

No wonder I’ve never liked his shows, and the majority of his work is derivative.

  7. suhsuh January 6, 2020

I think it’s great what he has come as far as he has and I have Zero hate in my heart about it those Medea plays were the BEST …BUT I think it’s sad that he limits the potential of how good the quality could really be a lot of black actors could have had a ton of noteable awards and would’ve created more classic movies not to mention really being selfish with a platform that could bring great black writers up and honest I wouldn’t be surprised if he said he shot and edited the shows too because they always look low budget even for having his own studio. At the end of the day it’s he stuff and he doesn’t have to share so ….??‍♂️

    • SMH January 6, 2020

That’s not really fair, its not that he doesn’t share his work, its the black community of writers, actors & directors in Hollywood that seem to have a problem with him (see Spike Lee, Denzel washington, etc). THEY are the ones who are distancing themselves away from him fro whatever reason, not the other way around.

    • High Price January 6, 2020

Have you seen the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS? The quality of the show visually looks EXPENSIVE! That show has come a long way! (Visual wise)

  8. SMH January 6, 2020

You can clearly tell he writes his work himself. With that said, a bunch of internet idiots who can’t even spell correctly or form complete sentences when they tweet are in NO position to say anything about his writing skills.

    • WILLIAMS January 6, 2020

I believe you misspelled for in your last tweet. DON’T JUDGE LEAST THE BE JUDGED BY THE SAME JUDGMENT YOU JUDGE. IJS.

  9. Haterz Gon‘ Hate January 6, 2020

All the haterz saying he shouldn’t write alone – but you know what? GUESS WHO MAKING BOSS MOVES OPENING THEIR OWN STUDIO????? clearly you cannot bankroll such efforts if the quality of your work is s***. In no time the industry will realise and he’ll be back to square one. So have some faith and worry about what you’re not doing in YOUR LIFE instead of hatin on someone who quiet clearly is doing well in their OWN. ☝?

  10. Truth January 6, 2020

Outstanding Work…black people always finding a way to hate on their own. He was trying to be inspirational with his post, but here come the broke ass hood trash who wouldn’t know work ethic if it bit them in the ass.

    • Clarks0oñ January 6, 2020

Dumb àss , what is inspirational about creating excess garbage?
Creating movies/tv that would never stand the test of time

Breaking bad has been over for several years now but I’m rewatching it all over again cause it’s so good.
Good writing, good complex characters, go plot/story, good visuals etc.

Tyler Perry productions are so bad, let’s forget about the poor writing/story for a minute.

The wigs the actors wear are so bad,
he hires male Instagram thirst traps as his actors, dudes who are good looking but can act for shìt.
      ??????

Bìtch havana is already a classic.
Sold an extra 1 million copies in 2019 alone. Everybody knows the words to the song.

Senorita also a modern classic. Everybody knows the words to the song.

People sing both songs at karaoke bars.

Both songs 1 billion streams each.
Both songs received Grammy nominations and acclaim from critics.

Hate Camila all u want but u cant deny it, she delivers quality.

‘Romance’ by @Camila_Cabello jumps 21 positions to #14 on this week’s Billboard 200 chart!

The album u guys called a flop is bouncing back on the chart.
        ???????

  11. Only facts January 6, 2020

Oh trust me, it SHOWS that you write all of your work alone because it all sucks. I mean the writing on the Haves and Have Nots, The Oval, Sistas, etc is terrible. There’s a reason none of your shows or movies are nominated for any awards. It’s TRASH.

    • Happy n Rich January 7, 2020

Yes, only facts — all of it.

  12. DeanD January 6, 2020

This might be the case now, MIGHT, but he had multiple writers working for him on Meet the Browns and House of Payne, so for him to say that he does all his writing himself is just untrue.

  13. ??‍♀️Jazzy Da Bi Asian ??‍♀️Not ? TROLLmine ??‍♀️Nor ? TRASHmine January 6, 2020

    He’s so talented!

  14. Victoria Hines January 6, 2020

I can believe that many of his scripts were written at different stages and years, bits and pieces here and there to complete a story like authors do. He follows through with his work and has several and different storylines in his head that he needs to put on paper to revisit and finalize.

  15. TheBeesPoeKnees January 6, 2020

It is such a shame that stupid lemon brained black people, will support another black man that exploits other black people. You all think for one second Tyler is writing ever single line, all by himself, and does not have writers???? Here is a hint: The guy that wrote the episode of The Boondocks that makes fun of Tyler Perry IS A FORMER WRITER on Perry’s staff. People that have worked with Perry knows he is known to steal credit for others work. They have no power, no union representation, and can get away with it, because these people are “nobodies”, and Tyler is the only person giving them some work, and if they say anything they are out of a job, and they don’t have the means to make it anywhere else. This is exactly why Tyler doesn’t use Union workers. Because he could not get sway with it otherwise.

  16. Lanafan1 January 6, 2020

Yeah, maybe you should stop doing that!

  17. MonkeyseeMonkeydo January 6, 2020

Unctie Tyler Perry need writers. A lot of his work is repetitive and boring. None of his current shows are pulling in huge ratings. Writers from different backgrounds can definitely help elevate his work.

  18. Doris January 6, 2020

Mr. Perry’s work reads exactly like he wrote it all himself when the actors say the lines so this is one hundred percent believable. Very few actors will risk the nice pay check by saying anything to him. The audience members who feel cheated will turn the channel. Those who keep watching often do so to see how bad the writing can continue getting. Either way it’s a learning experience.

  19. Cheryl January 6, 2020

Tyler needs to get other people’s help on writing scripts. His shows are dry and make no sense. He drags scenes to no end and he doesn’t know how to utilize all of his characters on one show. I often look at bus shows and say he needs to watch soap operas maybe he will get it.

  20. High Price January 6, 2020

What’s not to believe? There are some PHENOMENAL writers out here that can SOLEY take credit. He’s not exempt. Who do you think wrote them plays and movies when he first started out and was living in his car for months? I doubt a round table of people even supported him. This generation is SO quick to discredit people. They’re the ones that need to take heed of the knowledge he’s dropping because they are definitely doomed if they don’t wake up.

  21. Gui Trabue January 6, 2020

He writes creates produces & directs his own movies & shows. So nobody knows how he got to where he is today. He has his own studio so y’all can’t say anything about his success.

  22. Happy n Rich January 7, 2020

It’s obvious. The tragic thing is that TP thinks that’s a good thing.

Compare his shows to the other shows on OWN, and his shows come up short, especially against shows like Greenleaf and Ambitions.

It was rumored that Oprah Winfrey asked him to hire additional writing talent, which caused a rift between them and caused him to pitch his newest shows to BET.

  23. Adrienne January 7, 2020

Mr. Perry, you need assistance. Your writing is atrocious. You owe Ms. Winfrey an apology. NO man is an Island unto himself. You need script writers and focus groups. Ratings do not last forever. Quality lasts a lifetime. You’re taking advantage of your fanbase and it’s shameful.

  24. Desiree Edghill January 7, 2020

I haven’t done nearly as much writing as Tyler, but I did all my writing myself. Congrats Sir for all the work you have shared for our enjoyment and edification and for giving so many black actors and actresses the opportunity to shine. God bless you.

  25. Jonas Abbey January 8, 2020

    Congratulations man
I believe it is the same loyalty keeping the ministration of Jesus keeping you and the fact that, you want the Blacks to realised how creative and reach they are….

  26. Condia Perry January 8, 2020

I applaud Tyler Perry for every accomplishment, every rejection he didn’t allow to stop him , every hurdle he overcame, every time he told himself “I can do it with or without their help“, every time he gave God the glory and every morsel of food he’s put on someone’s table because of the jobs he’s provided. However, just like every actor, no matter how highly skilled/trained they are needs an acting coach, you need writers. There’s not a writer out there that hasn’t been sitting around the writers table and said “damn, I would’ve never thought of that” to a concept, an idea or a joke another writer came up with…not one. To give birth to anything, takes 2, your work is no different…you’re birthing what’s inside of your mind. I know God is your copilot/co parent, but you need a doctor or midwife coaching you all the way thru the birthing process. That’s what additional writers will do…coach, cheer and guide that script to the finish. This may sound corny as hell, but TP Studios may never hang an Emmy, a Golden Globe or Oscar on its walls until you allow other talented writers like yourself to sit at that table and come up with brilliant content that shake the Actor’s Guild in their boots.
P.S. I’ve been on your set with you, years ago as an “extra”…you are a force to be reckoned with. I love your spirit and grind. Make 2020 the year of TP Studios first award nomination!!

Why are there no thumbs up and thumbs down buttons here….
