Like many, Jason Derulo had high hopes for ‘Cats’ – not least because he starred in the film as Rum Tum Tugger.
However, what was intended to be a blockbuster ended up as a box office catastrophe.
The 2019 flick, which co-starred Taylor Swift and boasted a budget of over $100 million, bombed at the box office after generating just $75 million at the US box office. It also didn’t fare well internationally.
Much of the blowback centered on the poor CGI (which, in an unprecedented move, had to be updated post-release).
Months removed from the chaos, Derulo is reflecting on the film.
Serving as his first role, he explained that he thought the Tom Hooper production “was gonna change the world.”
More from the ‘Savage Love’ singer below…
“For the longest time, I was trying to figure out what’s the perfect first role? Cats checked all the boxes. You can’t get a more star-studded cast, you don’t get a more respected director than an Oscar winner, and Rum Tum Tugger is a legacy role, a standout character in a classic musical.”
“Even when I saw the trailer, I thought it looked unbelievable. Like, I know some people saw it and they were terrified, but I got chills down my spine! I thought it was gonna change the world.
It didn’t pan out. With all things that left-field, it could either be considered genius or bats–t crazy. That’s the risk you take.”
Welp. At least he’s keeping it 100.
